Boney M.'s 50th anniversary is being celebrated in a big way

 

After a long break, FFFclub resumes publications on its information blog. We hope to be able to inform our audience more often about the most important events related to Frank Farian's musical legacy, his artists and new audio and video releases. We would also like to remind you that links to all current news are constantly published in our blog on the social network facebook, and video materials are regularly added to the FFFclub video channel on the YouTube platform.

So, in this issue we will briefly inform you about the events related to the various projects of the legendary German producer, as well as the artists associated with them.

Let's start with the most important thing. Media giant Sony Music, which has long been a distributor of content produced by Farian's company FAR Music GmbH and his record label MCI, has launched an impressive promotional campaign associated with the most successful project of the German music industry. To mark the 50th anniversary of the creation of the world-famous Boney M., the project's official website was updated, and the official YouTube channel began to be actively replenished with archival materials in Full HD format.

The catalog division of Sony Music Germany has announced the first anniversary release of Boney M. 2025. This is a collection of five multi-colored vinyl discs with remixes of the Caribbean foursome's biggest hits (Daddy Cool, Sunny, Rasputin, Ma Baker, Rivers Of Babylon), complemented by the group's sensational debut poster from 1976. The price of the gift set Boney M. - The Hits: The Mixes EP Collection (vol.1) is 130 euros. Pre-order of each disc separately is also available (30 euros each). The official release date is September 26th.

Earlier, Sony Music released a new remix of the hit "Sunny" by a certain R3HAB on streaming platforms, which long-time fans of the group found quite ordinary and did not give special attention to.

An Australian documentary series about Frank Farian's career and major projects is expected to be released over the next year and a half, as well as various programmes on German TV channels dedicated to Boney M's 50th anniversary.

The author of the official Spanish-language site boneym.es, Valentin del Olmo, recently presented his book "Boney M.'s Child", which is also dedicated to the group's anniversary. The book is already available for order. You can find more details HERE.

Boney M.'s lead singer, Liz Mitchell, received a royal award in the UK and also gave an interview to one of London's TV channels on the occasion of the band's anniversary. We will publish details in a separate article.

In the cemetery of the German federal state of Saarland, where Frank Farian (real name Franz Reuther) is buried together with his mother (Cecilia "Zilli" Reuther), an impressive tombstone has been installed in the form of a mixing console and a biblical quote from Boney M.'s biggest hit "Rivers Of Babylon". The local press reports that the producer's grave is becoming a place of pilgrimage for tourists.

Artists from Frank Farian's projects such as Boney M., ERUPTION, NO MERCY, LA BOUCHE and MILLI VANILLI continue to actively tour the world. The press and social networks regularly report on concerts featuring Liz Mitchell, Maizie Williams, Precious Wilson, Marty Cintron, Lane McCray, and such people as Fab Morvan and Charles Shaw from MILLI VANNILLI continue to speculate on the scandal surrounding this project and are regulars on various radio and television talk shows. We will provide you with details in future publications.

45th anniversary of Boney M.'s iconic album "Nightflight To Venus"

This year, fans of the legendary German-Caribbean project Boney M. are celebrating the 45th anniversary of the release of the group's most successful album, "Nightflight To Venus". According to the media holding DW-TV, this LP is still one of the TOP 10 highest-grossing bestsellers in the German recording industry. It is not possible to calculate the number of sales of illegal copies, but this number exceeds the number of official copies by at least several times.

On the occasion of the above-mentioned anniversary, Sony Music (the general distributor of Frank Farian's record label, which created Boney M.) has released a series of "visualized audio tracks" for the album "Nightflight To Venus". Many fans of the quartet, however, did not appreciate this step, since the computer graphics, designed to “revive” static pictures of the group members, are very primitive. With today's 3D animation capabilities, this is perceived as even lower than the average amateur level. We can only hope that for the 50th anniversary we will finally be offered something much more impressive.

At the same time, the musical material recorded for the album remains very relevant. The multi-million views on the official Boney M. YouTube channel of such bestsellers as “Rasputin”, “Rivers of Babylon”, “Brown Girl in the Ring” and other video tracks taken from “Nightflight to Venus” are very indicative.

Also this month marks the 45th anniversary of Boney M.'s sensational tour in the USSR. In past years, we have already devoted several of our publications to this event, so we will not repeat it today. However, FFFclub has plans to make a new documentary about this tour on the 50th anniversary, which is in 2028. This is due to the fact that we have new additional material and new technical capabilities at our disposal.

В этом году поклонники легендарного немецко-карибского проекта Boney M. отмечают 45-летие выхода самого успешного альбома группы - "Nightflight To Venus". Согласно сообщению медиахолдинга DW-TV, этот LP до сих пор входит в TOP10 самых кассовых бестселлеров германской звукозаписывающей индустрии. По всему миру проданы десятки миллионов официальных копий альбома и сопровождавших его синглов. Подсчитать количество продаж нелегальных копий не представляется возможным, но это число превосходит количество официальных копий, как минимум, в несколько раз.

По случаю упомянутого выше юбилея, Sony Music (генеральный дистрибютер рекорд-лэйбла Фрэнка Фариана, создавшего Boney M.) выпустила серию "визуализированных аудиотрэков"* к альбому "Nightflight To Venus". Многие поклонники творчества квартета, однако, не оценили такой шаг, поскольку компьютерная графика, призванная "оживить" статичные картинки с изображением участников группы, весьма примитивна. При сегодняшних возможностях 3D-анимации это воспринимается даже ниже, чем средний любительский уровень. Остаётся лишь надеяться, что к 50-летнему юбилею нам, наконец, предложат что-то гораздо более впечатляющее.

В то же время, музыкальный материал, записанный для альбома, остаётся весьма актуальным. Многомиллионные просмотры на официальном канале Boney M в YouTube таких бестселлеров как "Rasputin", "Rivers of Babylon", "Brown Girl in the Ring" и других номеров, взятых из "Nightflight to Venus", весьма показательны.

Также в этом месяце отмечается 45-летие сенсационных гастролей Boney M. в СССР. В прошлые годы мы уже посвятили несколько наших публикаций этому событию, поэтому сегодня не будем повторяться. Тем не менее, в FFFclub имеются планы сделать новый документальный фильм об этих гастролях в 50-ю годовщину, то есть в 2028-м. MILLI VANILLI biopic: Girl, you know it's not entirely true

It seems that our preliminary review of the biopic about Frank Farian's most scandalous project is not far from the truth. After the noisy premiere in Germany of a new film about the glamorous duo, the creator of the largest pop hoax in history finally spoke out. In an interview with the Saarbrücker Zeitung newspaper, which was then replicated in many other German media, Farian made it clear that the story presented by director and screenwriter Simon Verhoeven does not adequately reflect the events of 35 years ago.

“It’s less than 80% true, and it’s not the truth I experienced,” says 82-year-old Franz Reuther (real Frank Farian's name). However, the producer really liked the interpretation of his image by the German film star Matthias Schweighöfer. One of the main problems of the biopic, judging by the facts stated in the interview, is the incorrect interpretation of the image of Robert Pilatus, who tragically died in 1998. The circumstances of the life and death of the former “visual frontman” of the pop duo were much more dramatic than shown in the film. “Robert was long been a heavy drug addict. I paid for his treatment at a rehab clinic in Schwarzwald and posted a $300,000 bail to get him out of jail. It was a big drama for us. Rob's death was mourned by the whole world, but, as my daughter, who saw the film in Miami, testifies, no one in the audience mourned.” That is why the producer prefers to distance himself somewhat from the version presented in the biopic. “Although I am a co-producer of the film “Girl You Know It’s True,” I did not influence the filming process, completely trusting the authors,” Farian noted.

However, there is some good news for MILLI VANILLI fans. The producer announced that following the collection of classic hits and the soundtrack to the biopic, a previously unpublished album MILLI VANILLI will be released. It was recorded in the late 1990s, but was not published due to the death of Robert Pilatus. The video clip for the second single has already been shot. "So this is not the end of the story," says Farian.

Однако, для поклонников MILLI VANILLI есть и приятные новости. A Sony Music release dated April 14, 2023, which went almost unnoticed. We mention the single so late only because this record is of no interest to fans of Boney M's music. Essentially, this is a classic 1976 track from the catalog of the famous Frank Farian project, which is complemented by rap from a certain Connor Price. In 2022, he appeared in the Connor Price & Bens project, which released the short track “Spinnin” (available only on digital music platforms). In the Netherlands it reached number 55 and left the TOP100 after 3 weeks. However, on YouTube "Spinnin" has more than 4 million views. This rapper also has the track “Not A Beanie”, published under the name Connor Price & bbno$ on March 17, 2023, and several other collaborations released in the next few months.

MILLI VANILLI 2023: latest news

After the launch of the feature-length documentary "MILLI VANILLI" on the Paramount+ video streaming platform in the second half of October, the catalog of this project by Frank Farian increased in price by 34%, according to a report in the American magazine Billboard. On November 17, 2023, sales of the anniversary release “The Best of  MILLI VANILLI (35th Anniversary)”, released by the MCI record label and its distributor Sony Music, began. Since the compilation is published on all currently available audio media and major digital download services, it is hardly possible to expect a big breakthrough in any particular category. However, several previous releases (even before the release of the new collection) were seen in the digital download charts of the UK, Czech Republic, Australia, Indonesia, Paraguay and some other countries. This coincided with the release of the documentary on Paramount+.

The anniversary album "The Best of MILLI VANILLI" entered the German iTunes TOP100 chart on November 17, that is, on the day sales started.

The main expectations for a surge in sales seem to be related to the upcoming biopic "Girl You Know It's True", which will premiere in German-speaking countries on December 21. Distribution in this region is handled by LEONINE Studios and Constantin Film. The distribution rights in other parts of the world are held by the American film company Voltage Pictures, which is based in the capital of Hollywood, Los Angeles. Most likely, "Girl You Know It's True" will appear in cinemas and streaming platforms in other countries in 2024. However, the soundtrack for the biopic will be released much earlier, on November 24, 2023.

How an inconspicuous German song from the early 70s became a big hit twice in the 20th and 21st centuries

In 1973, the German pop/rock band from Berlin Nighttrain (Heinz Huth, Horst Lippok, Jürgen Huth, Rolf Gurra, Wolfgang Fritsch) released a single called "Hallo Bimmelbahn". The song did not become a sensation and did not even hit the charts. At that time, no one could even think that she was destined to conquer the world twice, with an interval of more than 30 years. And the main “culprit” of this unusual story will be producer Frank Farian.

In the second half of the 1970s, Farian's project Boney M. became a huge hit all over the world. They went down in history as the kings of the glamorous disco era and almost every one of their songs became bestsellers. In 1979, Boney M. recorded the ballad "El Lute", a biographical saga about the "Spanish Robin Hood of the 20th century" Eleuterio Sanchez Rodriguez. The original was in English. Of course, the single immediately entered the European charts.

At that time, it was common practice in West Germany to make German-language cover versions of big international hits, which local artists performed on the popular TV show ZDF Hitparade. One such performer was Michael Holm, a star of the German pop scene. He really wanted to get permission from Farian to perform the German version of "El Lute" and waited a long time for the author's permission. As some experts in German show business say, in order to speed up the process, Holm offered Farian an “exchange” for a track from his catalog. The fact is that Holm co-wrote and co-produced the single "Hallo Bimmelbahn", in which Farian's team subsequently discovered the beginnings of a potential hit (however, Heinz and Jürgen Huth interpret this story somewhat differently). The exchange took place and soon discos around the world were shaking with a cover version called “Gotta Go Home” performed by Boney M. At the same time, the main part of the vocals was recorded by Farian himself...

In 2010, the American DJ duo from New York DUCK SAUCE, digging through music archives, discovered “Gotta Go Home” and decided to use a sample of Farian’s voice in their comic track called “Barbra Streisand”. According to the members of DUCK SAUCE, they managed to get permission from Frank. Suddenly the single became a worldwide dance hit. In a short time, more than 3 million copies were sold both on physical media and through online music services. Sony Music, which has the rights to distribute Farian's back catalogue, said it would demand compensation for the use of the Boney M track. There were reports in the press about an upcoming trial. What behind-the-scenes agreements were reached between the parties is not known for certain. However, at the beginning of 2011, Farian's record label MCI and Sony Music released a single and a remix album under the brand "Boney M. GOES CLUB" with their version of "Barbra Streisand", and also added the "original" from DUCK SAUCE as a bonus. A little later, an extended version was released in some countries on a double CD called Boney M. Ultimate 2.0 (a compilation of the classic hits of the Caribbean four + a collection of new remixes). The releases reached the top charts in several countries, including Poland, South Korea, France and Belgium.

After that, new cover versions of "Barbra Streisand" performed by other artists began to pour out of a cornucopia. However, no one was able to repeat the success of Boney M. and DUCK SAUCE.

The upcoming 'Girl You Know It’s True' — about the rise and fall of the 1980s pop duo — demonstrates that if you’re going to make a movie about musical artists, you had better secure the rights to their songs.

If you’re going to make a music biopic — and with new dramatic takes on the lives of Bob Dylan, Amy Winehouse, Bob Marley and Michael Jackson on the way, it appears everyone is — you’d better secure the music rights. Making a movie purporting to tell the story of a pop music legend without first clearing rights to use the pop music that made them legendary is a recipe for box office disaster.

Remember Stardust, Gabriel Range’s 2020 David Bowie biopic starring Johnny Flynn, shot without any music from Bowie? Or Jimi: All Is By My Side (2013) directed by John Ridley with André 3000 as Jimi Hendrix playing none of his original songs? How about England Is Mine, Mark Gill’s unauthorized Morrissey biopic with Jack Lowden and Jodie Comer? Probably not. Without the sing-alone tunes, those films sank without a trace.

The blockbuster pop biopics — Bohemian Rhapsody, Rocketman, Straight Outta Compton, Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis — were all made with the support of the artists or their estates and came packed with a jukebox full of back-catalog hits.

The film, shot mostly in English — the common language of MILLI VANILLI members Fab Morvan, who is French, and German Rob Pilatus — hits German theaters on Dec. 21 and is being sold worldwide at AFM by Voltage Pictures.

Tijan Njie and Elan Ben Ali respectively star as Milli Vanilli frontmen Pilatus and Morvan. Army of Thieves star Matthias Schweighöfer plays Frank Farian, the music industry Svengali who packaged and produced the band. Simon Verhoeven (Welcome to Germany, Men in the City) directed from his own script.

Milli Vanilli became chart-topping global stars during the 1980s, scoring three No. 1 hits in the U.S. and winning a Grammy for best new artist in 1990. But the duo had a dirty secret: They were a fake band. Pilatus and Morvan never did their own singing, instead lip-syncing to the voices of two other artists.

When the truth came out, the group plunged from superstardom and became a punchline. After a failed comeback attempt, Pilatus’ life spiraled out of control. In 1998, he was found dead in a Frankfurt hotel room of a suspected alcohol and prescription drug overdose.

“I think it’s a unique story of the rise and fall of a global pop band,” says Berg, “but it was essential for us to also capture the feel and the joy of the music of that time. And for that, we needed the original songs.”

The rights to MILLI VANILLI’s music are scattered among several parties. Berg, whose production credits include the hit Netflix series Dark and the Oscar-winning The Lives of Others, secured rights to the film’s title track (also the name of the band’s breakthrough 1989 album) directly from R&B music producer and performer Kevin Liles, who composed the original version of “Girl You Know It’s True” with his Baltimore DJ crew Numarx in 1986. He brought on Jasmin Davis, daughter of the late singer John Davis, and Brad Howell — the two were the true voices of MILLI VANILLI — as associate producers and development consultants. Several of the band’s songs were available to license through Sony Music.

“But then there were the songs that Frank [Farian] produced, and he had certain rights, and rights of refusal,” says Berg. “Sorting that out was a bit more complicated.”

Berg flew back and forth to Miami to try and convince the now 82-year-old Farian — “a very headstrong character, who has a very specific take on the history of Milli Vanilli” — to sign over his rights. “He kept us on edge. I was at the airport ready to fly back and 30 minutes before my plane took off, Farian called and we did the deal.”

Having original music rights for a pop biopic definitely boosts a project’s profile — in addition to the built-in audience of the artists’ fans, the film’s soundtrack, with all those original tracks, can be a lucrative revenue stream. (Sony Music drops the Girl You Know Its True soundtrack on Nov. 24.)

But to secure the approval of the original artists, producers are often required to make edits to ensure an artists-approved, that is sanitized, version of their life story. Bohemian Rhapsody was criticized for its PG treatment of Queen frontman Freddy Mercury’s sex life. Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis skirted around the King of Rock and Roll’s treatment, some would say abuse, of his wife, Priscilla Presley (the subject of Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla, which was made without original Elvis songs.)

Fabrice Morvan says he declined to participate in Girl You Know It’s True because of Farian’s involvement with the film.

“The reason I chose not to participate in the MILLI VANILLI biopic out of Germany is because I did not want to be involved with Frank Farian,” Morvan said in an email to The Hollywood Reporter.

But, despite Farian’s involvement, Berg says Girl You Know It’s True is “not the Frank Farian version” of the story. “We wanted to focus on Rob and Fab, the two faces of MILLI VANILLI. Frank Farian is an important third figure and he has his own take on what happened, but we wanted to stay independent, to be able to tell this story from many different perspectives.”

Girl You Know It’s True has made it over the line ahead of more prominent U.S. attempts to tell the MILLI VANILLI story, including a long-gestating attempt by disgraced director/producer Brett Ratner. The Rush Hour and Tower Heist filmmaker had planned the music biopic as his return to filmmaking after facing sexual misconduct and harassment claims by multiple women including Olivia Munn and Natasha Henstridge. (Ratner has denied the claims.) In early 2021, Millennium Media came on board to co-produce the project and handle sales but quickly pulled out. The project’s current status is unknown.

Girl You Know It’s True rolls out in the wake of Luke Korem’s well-received documentary MILLI VANILLI, which premiered at Tribeca this year and bowed on Paramount+ last month. Berg and Verhoeven were associative producers on the doc, which was produced by MRC Non-Fiction. (The Hollywood Reporter is part of PMRC holdings, a joint venture between PMC and MRC).

“We think the film and the documentary can exist side by side, they complement each other,” says Berg. “Both tell different sides of this incredibly, fascinating story of ’80s music history.”

On February 1, 2023, Sony Music-owned record label Nitron released an official announcement that Boney M.'s 2021 remixed track "Rasputin" has surpassed half a billion plays on streaming platforms. According to the German internet portal smago.de, which specializes in show business news, this is by far the biggest hit for the Sony/Nitron label. The original recording, released by the producer and founder of the Boney M. project Frank Farian back in 1978, immediately became incredibly popular on all continents. This year, the musical bestseller celebrates its 45th anniversary by setting another record.

In an interview with the trade magazine MusikWoche, Thorsten Sack, Senior Director of Product Distribution for Sony/Nitron, made no secret of his delight, calling "Rasputin" a real international hit.

Simultaneously, LA BOUCHE, another Frank Farian's project, is making a comeback on Shazam and Apple/iTunes digital music platforms with the 1995 hit "Be My Lover". This week the track is on the charts in 12 countries, including Germany, Austria, Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, Switzerland, Canada, Ukraine, Libya, Paraguay, Belarus and Costa Rica.

At the same time, LA BOUCHE's debut album "Sweet Dreams" (1995) has been in the TOP 50 of the Libyan iTunes segment for almost a year, reaching N1 last summer.

Британские поклонники поп-музыки 1970-х получили возможность приобрести новое ремастированное переиздание макси-версий лучших хитов эпохи disco. Местное подразделение Sony Music/EMI в конце сентября выпустило великолепную компиляцию на 4-х CD под названием "NOW That's What I Call 12" 70s".

Составители сборника, ранее дебютировавшего на музыкальном рынке Германии, были рады представить антологию из 42 трэков 12-дюймовых и расширенных версий самых определяющих и запоминающихся записей звёзд той эпохи.

В CD1 собрано множество хитов всемирно известных артистов: Элтон Джон с оригинальной 12-дюймовой версией «Are You Ready For Love» 1979 года, за которой следует длинная версия «Goodnight Tonight» от Wings — и 7-минутная версия №1 «We Don’t Talk Anymore» от Клиффа Ричарда. Расширенная версия «Heart Of Glass», хит №1 от Blondie подхватывает эстафету наряду с синтезаторными хитами от Roxy Music, Japan, M и The Flying Lizards. Завершают 1й CD несколько классических 12-дюймовых версий в стиле New Wave от Лене Лович, Public Image Limited, хит №1 «Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick» от Ian Dury & The Blockheads — и потрясающая полноформатная версия «Rock Lobster» от The B-52.

CD2 открывает превосходная лонг-версия в стиле Electronic Disco «Beat The Clock» группы Sparks, далее следует новаторской «Supernature» от Cerrone и танцевальный «From East To West» от Voyage. Культовый «Spacer» от Sheila & B Devotion появляется здесь в миксе Тома Моултона, к которому присоединяются расширенные поп-жемчужины от Boney M., ERUPTION, Leif Garrett и The Three Degrees. В заключение второго CD — две классических диско-композиции космической эры: «Automatic Lover» от Dee D. Jackson и немного «галактического фанка» от Meco со «Star Wars Theme/Cantina Band», которая доступна здесь в 12-дюймовой версии (7:35), первоначально выпущенной как промо только для ди-джеев.

CD 3 и 4 прославляют богатое наследие диско 1970-х. Массивные хиты от Earth, Wind & Fire With The Emotions, McFadden & Whitehead и Heatwave представлены вместе с расширенной версией классической песни «Saturday Night Fever», Ивонн Эллиман с «If I Can’t Have You» и возвышенной «Native New Yorker» группы Odyssey. Внушительные клубные трэки от Дэна Хартмана и Грэйс Джонс переходят в захватывающую «Like An Eagle» от Денниса Паркера, а Шер со своим 12-дюймовых хитом 1979 года является главной жемчужиной 3-го диска.

На протяжении более чем 17-ти минут 12-дюймовая версия «Macarthur Park Suite» Донны Саммер по-прежнему ошеломляет. За ней следует золотой хит от The Trammps с полной версией «Disco Inferno», искрящиеся изысканностью Chic, невероятная по энергетике «Light My Fire/137 Disco Heaven» Эми Стюарт, а также Frantique и Vicki Sue Robinson.
