German television network ARD has shown a new documentary about Frank Farian

 

On December 30, 2024, the ARD television network showed a new documentary about Germany's most successful music producer Frank Farian (real name Franz Reuther). During his more than 50-year career in show business, Farian has sold more than a billion records worldwide. Only a few world-class producers have been able to achieve such results.

In the early 1960s, he first appeared on stage with his rock 'n' roll band Frankie Farian and the SHADOWS. A few years later, he began a solo career as a performer of German hits at the insistence of the then head of the Munich record label ARIOLA. However, Frank loved African-American music, so he gradually began to realize his creative ambitions as a producer in the mid-1970s at the West Berlin label HANSA Records. These were the heyday of the disco era. This way he becomes known internationally and his career takes off...

Farian's most famous projects: Gilla, Boney M., ERUPTION, FAR Corporation, MILLI VANILLI, LA BOUCHE, NO MERCY. Farian has also produced artists such as Meat Loaf, Terence Trent D'Arby, Precious Wilson, Daniel Lopes, Jane Collins and many others.

Franz Reuther died on January 23, 2024 in Miami. A year and a half before that, he had undergone complex heart surgery.

Farewell ceremony for Frank Farian in Berlin

The Berlin farewell ceremony for singer, songwriter and Germany's most successful music producer, Frank Farian, took place as planned, March 4, 2024.

The Kreuzberg district, known as Berlin's "Mecca" for creative people, has become a place to honor the departed pop genius on the European continent. Let us recall that in February a similar ceremony took place in Miami (Florida, USA), where the producer lived and worked in recent years. 

This time, the closest relatives, friends and colleagues of Franz Reuther (real Farian's name) were also invited to the Heeresbäckerei hall. Such celebrities as Liz Mitchell, Marcia Barrett and Reggie Tsiboe (the main soloists of Boney M), the studio team of the MILLI VANILLI project, Gisela Wüchinger (stage name Gilla), Marty Cintron (NO MERCY) were seen there. Also at the memorial event were the creator of costumes for Boney M., Dagmar Engelbrecht, musicians who worked with Farian, employees of FAR Music and the MCI record label. In addition, Thomas Anders, lead singer of the pop duo MODERN TALKING and colleague from the legendary Berlin record label HANSA, was present.

Many artists arrived at the farewell ceremony, accompanied by members of their families, who also became part of the big story associated with Frank’s activities. Liz Mitchell arrived with her husband Thomas Pemberton (who is also her tour manager). Marcia Barrett, who lives in Berlin, arrived at Heeresbäckerei with her husband Marcus James (a renowned musician who has worked with Eddy Grant and has worked on Marcia's solo projects for the last 20 years). Gisela Wüchinger (Gilla) arrived with her husband Helmut Roelofs, who is a long-time employee of Farian's studio team.

All four children from Franz Reuter's two marriages (son Peter, daughters Nicole, Yanina and Zoe) were also present at the ceremony. In her emotional address to the crowd, Nicole Reuther said that her father left another gift for fans of his work. This is a new musical that Farian did not have time to present in person. Now his eldest daughter considers it her duty to bring Frank's work to audiences. We hope this will be another big surprise from the German music legend.

FAR Music production coordinator Ingrid Segieth said in an interview with ARD that until his death, Frank was actively working on new musical material, making new videos for the projects NO MERCY and MILLI VANILLI, and was also preparing to launch his second musical. It seemed that nothing foreshadowed trouble, but it happened. Now Farian’s work will be continued by his heirs, artists and musicians. 

As for the funeral, they are planned for the near future in the federal state of Saarland (southwest of the country), where the Reuther family burial place is located. According to preliminary information from local media, in accordance with the wishes of family members, this will be a non-public event for the closest people.

Производственный координатор компании FAR Music Ингрид "Милли" Сегит сказала в интервью для крупнейшей немецкой телесети телекомпании ARD (в России видео можно просмотреть только через запрещённый с 1-го марта 2024 VPN - ред.), что вплоть до самой смерти Фрэнк активно работал над новым музыкальным материалом, сделал новые видео для проектов NO MERCY и MILLI VANILLI и готовился к запуску своего второго мюзикла. Казалось, ничто не предвещало беды, но это случилось. Теперь дело Фариана продолжат его наследники, артисты и музыканты.

Что касается похорон, то они намечаются на ближайшее время в Сарре (юго-запад страны), где находится семейное захоронение Ройтеров. По предварительной информации местных СМИ, согласно пожеланию членов семьи, это будет непубличное мероприятие для самых близких людей.

70th Anniversary of the UK Music Charts: The Rich Legacy of Frank Farian

The online resource officialcharts.com these days is summing up the results of the 70th anniversary since the start of publishing charts for sales of music albums and singles in the UK. Various projects of the German producer Frank Farian more than once fell into the top ten of the popularity of this country. Suffice it to recall such stars as Boney M., ERUPTION, FAR Corporation, MILLI VANILLI and NO MERCY. We can also mention Stevie Wonder and Terence Trent D'Aarby, to whose success in the United Kingdom Farian was also involved. And, of course, let's not forget the rock star Meat Loaf with the album "Blind Before I Stop" (1986), which, although it did not reach the coveted UK TOP10, nevertheless became a notable phenomenon in the pop-rock genre. In addition to the names listed above, we can also mention other artists of the production company FAR Music, who got into the British TOP100, for example, LA BOUCHE (UK TOP30) and CHILLI feat. CARRAPICHO with the single "Tic, Tic, Tac".

Of course, Boney M. was and still is Farian's most successful project in the British Isles. Their mega-hit "Rasputin" continues to garner gold and platinum awards around the world and is insanely popular on youth social networks like TikTok, while timeless bestsellers like "Mary's Boy Child/Oh My Lord" and "Rivers of Babylon" continue to storm the charts as part of various thematic compilations.

The CD-bootleg of the album "Fight, Fight, Fight" by ERUPTION went on sale in the Russian music market, but not for long

Fans have long been waiting for the official re-release of the now rare album "Fight, Fight, Fight" (1980) by the British-Caribbean quintet ERUPTION, but so far it has not appeared on digital media. Unlike the first two albums, which became available on CD in a remastered version in 2016, it was not particularly outstanding from a commercial point of view, but very interesting in terms of the quality of the musical material.

Recall that Frank Farian, who oversaw the project, entrusted the production of "Fight, Fighth, Fight" to an employee of his company FAR Music, Rainer Maria Ehrhardt, who assisted him in creating the first albums of the quintet. At this time, the main soloist changed in the group. The "calling card" of ERUPTION, the legendary Precious Wilson, left her team to start a solo career under the guidance of Farian. She was replaced by a very talented singer Kim Davis, who, by that time, managed to get the title of the best performer in the club scene in Britain. Unfortunately, shortly after the release of the album, Kim died of a cerebral hemorrhage in a traffic accident. Because of this, the promotional campaign of the album was actually disrupted and the producers had to urgently look for a new vocalist. The new voice of ERUPTION was Jany Jane James, who initially had to perform on television to the soundtrack of her predecessor.

One way or another, but the musical content of the album was very innovative, given some of the creative stagnation in disco music at the turn of the decade. The sonorous and piercing voice of Kim Davis opened up the potential of the group from an unexpected side, when the musicians decided to change the style, placing more emphasis on such directions as funk, soul and gospel. Of course, there were classic dance hits like "Go, Johnnie, Go" and "Fight, Fight, Fight" as well, but overall the album stood out from the usual disco production of the period.

Unfortunately, today's major music labels, accustomed to operating in millions of copies, did not show due attention to this work, considering the re-release of the album not a very profitable business. Although most of the tracks from "Fight, Fight, Fight" have been re-released on CD as part of various compilations and as bonus tracks in previous remastered ERUPTION albums, it has never been released in full on CD. Music pirates filled this gap by releasing a bootleg of quite good quality on the market.

"Fight, Fight, Fight" has recently appeared in the largest russian online store ozon.ru and the entire batch of these CDs was completely sold out literally within a few hours...

Официального переиздания раритетного ныне альбома "Fight, Fight, Fight" (1980) британско-карибского квинтета ERUPTION поклонники ждали давно, но до сих пор он так и не появился на цифровых носителях. В отличие от двух первых альбомов, которые стали доступны на CD в ремастированной версии в 2016-м году, с коммерческой точки зрения он не был особо выдающимся, однако весьма интересен в плане качества музыкального материала.

Напомним, что Фрэнк Фариан (Frank Farian), курировавший проект, доверил продюсирование "Fight, Fighth, Fight" сотруднику своей компании FAR Music Райнеру Эрхардту (Rainer Maria Ehrhardt), который ассистировал ему при создании первых альбомов квинтета. В это время в группе сменилась главная солистка. "Визитная карточка" ERUPTION, легендарная Прэшес Уилсон, покинула свою команду, чтобы начать сольную карьеру под руководством Фариана. Её сменила очень талантливая певица Ким Дэвис (Kim Davis), которая, к тому времени, успела получить титл лучшей исполнительницы на клубной сцене Британии. К сожалению, вскоре после выпуска альбома, Ким погибла от кровоизлияния в мозг в результате дорожного инцидента. Из-за этого промо-кампания альбома была фактически сорвана и продюсерам пришлось срочно искать новую вокалисту. Новым голосом ERUPTION стала Джэйн Йохен (сценический псевдоним Jany Jane James), которой поначалу пришлось выступать на телевидении под фонограмму своей предшественницы.

Так или иначе, но музыкальное наполнение альбома было весьма новаторским, учитывая общий творчески застой в диско-музыке на рубеже десятилетий. Звонкий и пронзительный голос Ким Дэвис открыл потенциал группы с неожиданной стороны, когда музыканты решили изменить стиль, сделав больший акцент на таких направлениях как фанк, соул и госпел. Конечно, здесь также были классические танцевальные хиты типа "Go, Johnnie, Go" и титульной "Fight, Fight, Fight", однако в целом альбом заметно выделялся на фоне привычной диско-продукции того периода.

К сожалению, нынешние крупные музыкальные лэйблы, привыкшие оперировать миллионными тиражами, не проявили должного внимания к этой работе, посчитав переиздание альбома не слишком выгодным делом. И хотя большая часть трэков из "Fight, Fight, Fight" была переиздана на CD в составе различных сборников и в качестве бонус-тэков предыдущих ремастированных альбомов ERUPTION, его полный релиз на CD так и не состоялся. Эту брешь восполнили музыкальные пираты, выпустив на рынок весьма неплохой по качеству бутлег.

After a long break, the star of the group ERUPTION has released a new single

Fans of the talent of the leading soloist of the legendary band ERUPTION had to wait for this event for many years. Information that Precious Wilson was recording new material appeared long ago, but the release of new tracks was constantly delayed. And finally, at the end of July 2022, the singer announced on her Facebook blog that the single "Something's Gotten Hold of My Heart" is available for download on network music services, and you can also listen to it on streaming platforms and Youtube. Radio and maxi versions are currently available.

Recall that the amateur youth group Silent Eruption, formed in 1969, achieved worldwide success already as a professional pop quintet ERUPTION in the second half of the 1970s. A limited green vinyl reissue of ERUPTION's "Leave A Light" will be available in August

The British group SILENT ERUPTION was founded by immigrants from Ghana, Curaçao, Guyana and Jamaica in 1969. Soloist Precious Wilson, who has an outstanding voice, joined the project in 1974. The beginning of their career in the UK was rather modest, but after they were spotted by the assistant of the famous producer Frank Farian during a tour of West Germany, the artists gained international fame. Farian, who by that time had gained fame thanks to his work with Benny, Gilla, Charly Marks, The Falcons, Boney M. and some other European performers, transformed the group into the ERUPTION project. Thanks to their collaboration, such global bestsellers as "I Can't Stand The Rain", "One Way Ticket", "Valley Of The Dolls" and a number of others were born. 

"Leave A Light" became the second album of the group, recorded under the direction of Farian. It featured their signature funky sound combined with Eurodisco. The album's first single was a cover of Caston & Majors' "Leave A Light (I'll Keep A Light In My Window)", followed by "One Way Ticket" (a cover of Neil Sedaka's 1960s hit). It hit the TOP 10 bestsellers in continental Europe and the UK.

The new re-release on light green vinyl will be released in a limited edition of 750 copies, so we advise audio collectors and fans of the band's work not to miss this opportunity and pre-order in advance. Frank Farian's projects on New Year's TV air 2021/2022

As usual, during the Christmas and New Year holidays, the artists of the legendary German producer Frank Farian are most in demand on television. In Europe, it is impossible to find a country where their songs are not broadcast on television or radio. This New Year's TV season was no exception, so we saw on the air of many TV channels of long-loved stars.

In Germany, NDR and RBB was broadcast television programs with Frank Farian and Boney M. In Russia, REN TV and PIK TV channels was broadcast non-stop shows with replays of video versions of the festivals RETRO FM, Disco 80s and Disco 90s with Boney M. feat. Liz Mitchell, ERUPTION feat. Precious Wilson, Gilla and LA BOUCHE. In Poland, the POLSAT TV channel broadcast live a large-scale New Year's show, where was Boney M. feat. Liz Mitchell with the timeless hit "Rasputin".

Of course, it is not possible to keep track of all the appearances of FAR Music artists on the air, so we have mentioned only a small part of the New Year's television repertoire.

Several artists from Frank Farian's crew will perform in Romania on September 18th

Today, legendary performers from such famous Frank Farian's projects as Boney M., ERUPTION and NO MERCY will appear on two concert stages in Bucharest and Cluj.

Boney M. feat. Liz Mitchell and Eruption feat. Precious Wilson will perform in Cluj at the BT Arena Polyvalent concert hall. Also announced the participation of such famous European stars of the 80s as Gazebo, JOY, F.R. David and tribute bands ABBA.

NO MERCY feat. Marty Cintron will take to the stage at the National Arena in Bucharest, where the FOREVER HIT festival is taking place on a grand scale. The organizers expect this event to be included in the World Records Book, as, among others, the concert program will include 80-year-old Jimmy Helms (Londonbeat), who on his anniversary will perform as "the oldest active male pop group singer". Representatives of the Guinness Book of Records have already arrived in the Romanian capital to record this event. Also, viewers will meet with such artists as Haddaway, Sandra, Dr. Alban, Thomas Anders (ex-Modern Talking), Alphaville, Snap !, Nana, Technotronic, Las Ketchup, Ice MC, Mr. President and C-Block.

Two weeks earlier Marty Cintron performed with great success in Dubai, where he told local journalists about the upcoming series of 6 documentaries about his producer Frank Farian. 

Speaking to "The National" newspaper before a Dubai Opera concert, Marty Cintron, lead singer and sole member of former Europop trio NO MERCY, says he will appear in the series that examines Farian’s Midas touch over his four-decade career.

"Not many people today really know who Frank is and what he achieved in the industry. It's pretty crazy how much he did," says Cintron.

"It's made by a production company based in Germany and it will be a six-part series which will really go into his work. I will probably be on it because Frank wants me to and a few other acts he worked with."

Farian, 80, will have a lot of options to draw from.

After failing to make his mark as a solo act in the 1960s, he did the next best thing and recorded hits and promoted them by hiring musicians for public performances.

This was how Boney M. and Milli Vanilli were formed and ruled the charts through the 1970s and 1980s.

Farian wrote, produced and sung a many of the tracks while the hired help did the song and dance routine on stage.

While such a move proved relatively successful for the performing artists, it wasn't so for Milli Vanilli.

Cintron’s contributions to the series will focus on the next phase of Farian’s career, when he helped lead the 1990s Europop scene by creating and producing hit groups such as La Bouche, Le Click, Eruption and No Mercy.

Where La Bouche and Le Click anthems Sweet Dreams and Call Me subscribed to Farian’s vision of layering soulful vocals over tightly coiled dance beats and surging synths, No Mercy was where the maestro recorded his most organic sounds.

This was thanks to Cintron, whose parents migrated to the US from Cuba, being an accomplished flamenco guitar player.

“I first met Frank in Miami in 1992 before the band started and back then I was a big fan of the Spanish guitar,” Cintron recalls.

“At the time, I was hanging out with the Gipsy Kings before they really exploded on the scene and they showed me all these guitar techniques. I went on to infuse that into the No Mercy sound.”

While Cintron was a key player in the recording sessions, Farian was in charge of proceedings.

"The thing with Frank is that he was formerly a cook before he started singing and that's how he approaches the studio in that he has his hand in everything," Cintron explains.

"He is hands-on in the console, he does the songwriting, the lead and background vocals and the mixing.

“But at the same time, he also leaves us in the studio to kind of finish the song or for us to come up with something new which he would then go on to rearrange."

That approach is responsible for Cintron putting his mark on No Mercy’s biggest hits Where Do You Go and Kiss You All Over, which features his sensual guitar flutter over the euphoric dance production.

“It is a formula that went on to work,” he says.

“It also, I feel, helped bring a bit of the Latin sound to a new audience and I feel we played our part in that before Ricky Martin, Jennifer Lopez and now Maluma took it into a cool new direction."

While Cintron may have not achieved the relative commercial heights of those names, he is content with his enduring career.

“It’s not that there is a revival of '90s pop music, it has always been there,” he says.

“Before Covid, I have been touring non-stop and I recently played a show in Budapest, Hungary. And in all these shows I just see people smiling and really enjoying the happiness the music from that era really embodied.

“I look forward to sharing those happy moments now with all of you in Dubai.”

On the day of the 80th anniversary of the legendary producer, an online vote was organized on the official MDR website.

Contrary to many listeners' expectations, ERUPTION's "One Way Ticket" cover was the favorite. In total, 5 tracks from Boney M., already mentioned ERUPTION, as well as Milli Vanilli, No Mercy and Precious Wilon were offered to the public.

As a result, the sympathies of the radio listeners were distributed as follows:

The SR TV channel hosted the premiere of a documentary dedicated to the 80th anniversary of Frank Farian

On July 1, 2021, the German TV channel SR, a member of the largest nationwide media group ARD, showed the documentary "Daddy Cool from Elversberg - Frank Farian's World Career", the announcement of which was published on our blog.

The 45-minute film did not contain even the 10th part of what should have been told about this no ordinary person, but only briefly described his career in the global music industry. The author paid special attention to the beginning of the creative formation of the singer, songwriter and producer, which took place in the federal state of Saarland, which is located in southwestern Germany. Even his avid fans know little about this period of the life of Franz Reuther (the real Frank Farian's name), so the beginning of the film is of particular interest.

Farian's career as a record producer flourished in the 70s - 90s of the XX century. It was then that such famous projects as Boney M., ERUPTION, FAR Corporation, MILLI VANILLI, LA BOUCHE and NO MERCY were created. However, not a word was said about such artists as The Falcons, Benny, Gilla, Precious Wilson and many others who also worked with Farian. Of course, the limited timing of the TV program does not allow covering everything that was done, but it is necessary at least to list the list of brilliant performers who also made a significant contribution to the development of the European music industry.

At the same time, music collectors learned about the release of new albums on Farian's MCI record label this year. For example, a double disc of his very first rock 'n' roll band "Die Schatten" ("Frankie Farian and the Shadows"), as well as a Boney M's remix compilation "Rasputin - Lover of the Russian Queen" with 2 new bonus tracks prepared by to the 80th anniversary of the legendary producer.

However, the situation with the famous Latin American pop trio NO MERCY is not entirely clear, since in recent years their new album has been periodically announced, although it has not see the light. So far we only know that the original NO MERCY lineup was featured on the track Frank Farian feat. Yanina, Boney M. & No Mercy - "Cherish (The Life) / Rivers Of Babylon" (mash-up mix) and in the video of the same name, which is already available on YouTube.

Obviously, the new project of the SR TV channel is just one of the episodes associated with the celebration of the anniversary of the most successful Germany's hit-maker. Surely in the coming weeks, this topic will be devoted to reports on various TV channels, radio stations and in the news publications.
