MILLI VANILLI biopic will be available in the European Union on DVD and Blu-ray in May

At the beginning of May 2024, almost six months after the noisy premieres in Munich, Berlin and Frankfurt, the musical blockbuster "Girl, You Know It's True", based on the biography of Frank Farian's most sensational project, will be available in Europe on physical media. German stores selling video content announced a release for May 3. The film will initially be released in DVD and Blu-ray formats. It is not yet known whether it will be published on ultra-high definition discs (Ultra HD/4K), which provide the best image quality.

A little earlier it became known that the film received several nominations for the German equivalent of the Oscar (LOLA Awards), but not in the most important positions. Film critics note that the work of director Simon Verhoeven has two main drawbacks: a rather superficial study of the fate of the main characters (this would require much longer timing) and a look at the events that took place 35 years ago through the prism of a left-liberal narrative, which begins to irritate the public even in the most tolerant the BLM movement in countries. At the same time, the strengths of the film are entertainment, not inferior to Hollywood production, as well as the presence of an original soundtrack, which was used thanks to the participation of the late creator of the pop duo MILLI VANILLI Frank Farian as a co-producer of the biopic. All this contributed to recreating on the screen the unique era of the crazy 80s of the last century, when MTV ruled the world. Due to the above-mentioned shortcomings, the American company Voltage Pictures, which has the rights to distribute the film outside of Germany, is in no hurry to release the biggest story about the “phonogram scandal” on the big screen in North America. Perhaps they are trying to agree on a new edition of the biopic, or they are planning to immediately send it for rental on streaming services. But, most likely, this will happen only after the end of the run of "Girl You Know It's True" in European cinemas.

При этом сильными сторонами фильма является зрелищность, не уступающая голливудской продукции, а также наличие оригинального саундтрека, который был использован благодаря участию ныне покойного создателя поп-дуэта MILLI VANILLI Фрэнка Фариана в качестве со-продюсера байопика. Всё это способствовало воссозданию на экране неповторимой эпохи сумасшедших 80-х годов прошлого века, когда MTV правил миром.

Из-за упомянутых выше недостатков американская компания Voltage Pictures, обладающая правами на распространение фильма за пределами Германии, не спешит выпускать самую громкую историю о "фонограммном скандале" на большой экран в Северной Америке. Возможно, они пытаются договориться о новой редакции байопика или же планируют сразу отправить его для проката на стриминговых сервисах. MILLI VANILLI-biopic "Girl, You Know It's True" starts in Spanish cinemas

Following the lead of German-speaking countries (Germany, Austria, Switzerland), a biographical film about the rise and fall of the world-famous pop duo MILLI VANILLI comes to Spanish cinemas.

Almost 3 months have passed since the noisy premieres in Munich, Berlin and Frankfurt. During this time, we lost one of the main characters of this musical blockbuster - the creator and producer of MILLI VANILLI, Frank Farian.

The producer, shortly before his death, did not speak very flatteringly about this work, saying in an inteview that “less than 80% of the truth there.” However, he noted the performance of the famous actor Matthias Schweighöfer, who played the role of Farian and, according to the producer, did an excellent job with this task.

Let us remind you that the biopic “Girl, You Know It’s True” is actually an international project created by filmmakers and actors from Germany, France, the USA and South Africa. Filming costs are estimated at 11.5 million euros, which is almost 3 times the average cost of a European film. Distribution rights outside Germany belong to the American film company Voltage Pictures.

The biopic starts in Spain on March 27. Local critics received the film very favorably, although they noted the inappropriateness of the episodes where the characters tell details about themselves and their colleagues to the camera.

В Испании прокат байопика стартует 27 марта. Местная критика приняла фильм весьма доброжелательно, хотя отметила неуместность эпизодов, где герои рассказывают на камеру подробности о себе и своих коллегах.

Berlin premiere of the biopic about MILLI VANILLI

The noisy premiere of the MILLI VANILLI biopic "Girl You Know It's True" at the legendary Berlin cinema Zoo Palast with the participation of many famous people from Germany (and not only) took place on December 5th, and a little earlier in Munich. The growing European media holding LEONINE Studios did not skimp on advertising support for its main film production of 2023.

Even the former member of the scandalous pop duo, Fab Morvan, arrived at the premiere, who had previously stated that he allegedly did not want to participate in the project where Frank Farian was involved. However, when it was explained to Morvan that the film would be highly complimentary to him and his late “life brother” Rob Pilatus, the ex-dancer changed his mind. It is also possible that Morvan received a good fee for participating in the promotion of the new film.

The predominance of the ever-fashionable dark tones of suits, decorated with jewelry, dazzled the eyes. This was especially noticeable when the flashbulbs focused on the next star heading into the cinema lobby. Among the latter, however, there were exceptions who preferred almost complete nudity (and this was in December!). The German tabloid press actively discussed the provocatively erotic “dresses” of some celebrities, although it would be better if the correspondents devoted themselves to writing objective reviews of the film. Alas, this has not happened yet.

Apparently, the conflict between the main part of the MILLI VANILLI studio team and the frontman, who performed to the soundtrack, has not been overcome, despite the passage of 33 years since the end of the pop duo’s activities. In any case, the paparazzi’s attention was not focused on representatives of the FAR Music studio team. The press release from LEONINE Studios, however, mentions that the premiere was attended by Frank Farian's eldest daughter, Nicole Reuther, as well as the half-sister of the late Robert Pilatus and the daughter of singer John Davis, who died a couple of years ago from COVID-19, who was “the voice of Fab Morvan".

The main attention of the German media is now focused exclusively on the “guiltless” Fab, whom the German-Austrian director (and also the author of the script for “Girl You Know It’s True”) Simon Verhoeven drags with him to various TV channels and high-society events. It's obvious which side his sympathies are on.

It is not clear whether Simon, 51, knows how many vile acts Fab Morvan has committed against Frank Farian and the employees of his production company. Does Mr. Verhoeven know that Fab did not hesitate to curse his former employer with obscene words in the scandalous Dutch TV show “Jenssen!”? We have this video, but today it is almost impossible to publish this on YouTube unless you want to receive a warning about the use of obscene language or a ban.

We should also remind our readers that it was Farian and his assistant Ingrid Segieth who, at one time, pulled Robert Pilatus out of an American prison and paid for his treatment for drug addiction, although this ultimately did not give the desired result. But Fabrice Morvan, having once discovered Robert Pilatus in an almost insane state on one of the streets of Los Angeles, did not find anything better than to bring his “brother” to the drug den where he lived, and chose to forget about him. But after Rob’s death in 1998, when the world’s media once again began to savor “the biggest pop scandal in history,” he began to present himself and Rob as “innocent victims” of exploitation by “a ruthless show business machine ruled by white-skinned racists.” And this leftist information hurdy-gurdy is still playing in one variation or another. I wonder how much this will be reflected in the next biopic, which will be released on European screens on December 21, and later around the world?

Набирающий обороты европейский медиахолдинг LEONINE Studios не поскупился на рекламную поддержку своего главного кинодетища 2023 года.

На премьеру прибыл даже бывший участник скандального поп-дуэта Фаб Морван, который ранее заявлял, что якобы не хочет участвовать в проекте, где задействован Фрэнк Фариан. Однако, когда Морвану объяснили, что фильм будет весьма комплиментарным по отношению к нему и его ныне покойному "брату по жизни" Робу Пилатусу, экс-танцор изменил своё мнение. Также не исключено, что Морван получил хороший гонорар за участие в промоушене новой киноленты.

От преобладания вечно модных тёмных тонов костюмов, украшенных бижутерией, рябило в глазах. Особенно это было заметно, когда фотовспышки концентрировались на очередной звезде, направляющейся в фойе кинотеатра. Среди последних, правда, были исключения, которые предпочитали почти полную обнажёнку (и это в декабре!). Немецкая бульварная пресса активно обсуждала вызывающе эротичные "платья" некоторых селебретис, хотя лучше бы корреспонденты посвятили себя написанию объективных рецензий на фильм. Увы, пока этого не произошло.

Судя по всему, конфликт между основной частью студийной команды MILLI VANILLI и фронтменом, выступавшим под фонограмму, не преодолён, несмотря на прошедшие 33 года с момента прекращения деятельности поп-дуэта. Во всяком случае, на представителях студийной команды FAR Music и реальных вокалистах группы внимание папарацци не концентрировалось. В пресс-релизе LEONINE Studios, правда, упоминается, что на премьере побывала старшая дочь Фрэнка Фариана, Николь Ройтер, а также сводная сестра покойного Роберта Пилатуса и дочь умершего пару лет назад от COVID-19 певца Джона Дэвиса, который "озвучивал" в студии Фаба Морвана.

Основное внимание немецких СМИ нынче приковано исключительно к "без вины виноватому" Фабу, которого немецко-австрийский режиссёр (а по совместительству ещё и автор сценария "Girl You Know It's True") Саймон Верхоэвен таскает с собой по разным телеканалам и светским тусовкам. По всему видно, на чьей стороне его симпатии. Непонятно только, знает ли 51-летний Саймон, сколько подлых поступков совершил Фаб Морван по отношению к Фрэнку Фариану и сотрудникам его продюсерской компании. Знает ли господин Верхоэвен, что Фаб не постеснялся обругать своего бывшего работодателя матерными словами в скандальном голландском телешоу "Jenssen!"? У нас имеется эта видеозапись, однако сегодня опубликовать такое на youtube практически невозможно, если вы не хотите получить предупреждение об использовании нецензурной лексики или бан.

Следует также напомнить нашим читателям, что именно Фариан и его помощница Ингрид Сегит, в своё время, вытащили Роберта Пилатуса из американской тюрьмы и оплачивали его лечение от наркозависимости, хотя это, в итоге, не дало желаемого результата. А вот Фабрис Морван, обнаружив однажды Роберта Пилатуса в почти невменяемом состоянии на одной из улиц Лос-Анджелеса, не нашёл ничего лучшего, как довести своего "брата" до наркопритона, в котором тот проживал, и предпочёл забыть о нём, не оказав никакой реальной помощи. Зато после смерти Роба в 1998-м году, когда мировые СМИ вновь принялись смаковать "самый громкий поп-скандал в истории", он стал преподносить себя и Роба как "невинных жертв" эксплуатации "безжалостной машиной шоу-бизнеса, где правят белокожие расисты". И эта левацкая информационная шарманка в той ли иной вариации играет до сих пор. Интересно, насколько сильно это найдёт отражение в очередном байопике, который выходит на европейские экраны 21 декабря, а позже по всему миру?

MILLI VANILLI 2023: latest news

After the launch of the feature-length documentary "MILLI VANILLI" on the Paramount+ video streaming platform in the second half of October, the catalog of this project by Frank Farian increased in price by 34%, according to a report in the American magazine Billboard. On November 17, 2023, sales of the anniversary release “The Best of  MILLI VANILLI (35th Anniversary)”, released by the MCI record label and its distributor Sony Music, began. Since the compilation is published on all currently available audio media and major digital download services, it is hardly possible to expect a big breakthrough in any particular category. However, several previous releases (even before the release of the new collection) were seen in the digital download charts of the UK, Czech Republic, Australia, Indonesia, Paraguay and some other countries. This coincided with the release of the documentary on Paramount+.

The anniversary album "The Best of MILLI VANILLI" entered the German iTunes TOP100 chart on November 17, that is, on the day sales started.

The main expectations for a surge in sales seem to be related to the upcoming biopic "Girl You Know It's True", which will premiere in German-speaking countries on December 21. Distribution in this region is handled by LEONINE Studios and Constantin Film. The distribution rights in other parts of the world are held by the American film company Voltage Pictures, which is based in the capital of Hollywood, Los Angeles. Most likely, "Girl You Know It's True" will appear in cinemas and streaming platforms in other countries in 2024. However, the soundtrack for the biopic will be released much earlier, on November 24, 2023.

THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER: MILLI VANILLI Pic Offers a Case Study for the Perils of the Music Biopic

The upcoming 'Girl You Know It’s True' — about the rise and fall of the 1980s pop duo — demonstrates that if you’re going to make a movie about musical artists, you had better secure the rights to their songs.

If you’re going to make a music biopic — and with new dramatic takes on the lives of Bob Dylan, Amy Winehouse, Bob Marley and Michael Jackson on the way, it appears everyone is — you’d better secure the music rights. Making a movie purporting to tell the story of a pop music legend without first clearing rights to use the pop music that made them legendary is a recipe for box office disaster.

Remember Stardust, Gabriel Range’s 2020 David Bowie biopic starring Johnny Flynn, shot without any music from Bowie? Or Jimi: All Is By My Side (2013) directed by John Ridley with André 3000 as Jimi Hendrix playing none of his original songs? How about England Is Mine, Mark Gill’s unauthorized Morrissey biopic with Jack Lowden and Jodie Comer? Probably not. Without the sing-alone tunes, those films sank without a trace.

The blockbuster pop biopics — Bohemian Rhapsody, Rocketman, Straight Outta Compton, Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis — were all made with the support of the artists or their estates and came packed with a jukebox full of back-catalog hits.

The film, shot mostly in English — the common language of MILLI VANILLI members Fab Morvan, who is French, and German Rob Pilatus — hits German theaters on Dec. 21 and is being sold worldwide at AFM by Voltage Pictures.

Tijan Njie and Elan Ben Ali respectively star as Milli Vanilli frontmen Pilatus and Morvan. Army of Thieves star Matthias Schweighöfer plays Frank Farian, the music industry Svengali who packaged and produced the band. Simon Verhoeven (Welcome to Germany, Men in the City) directed from his own script.

Milli Vanilli became chart-topping global stars during the 1980s, scoring three No. 1 hits in the U.S. and winning a Grammy for best new artist in 1990. But the duo had a dirty secret: They were a fake band. Pilatus and Morvan never did their own singing, instead lip-syncing to the voices of two other artists.

When the truth came out, the group plunged from superstardom and became a punchline. After a failed comeback attempt, Pilatus’ life spiraled out of control. In 1998, he was found dead in a Frankfurt hotel room of a suspected alcohol and prescription drug overdose.

“I think it’s a unique story of the rise and fall of a global pop band,” says Berg, “but it was essential for us to also capture the feel and the joy of the music of that time. And for that, we needed the original songs.”

The rights to MILLI VANILLI’s music are scattered among several parties. Berg, whose production credits include the hit Netflix series Dark and the Oscar-winning The Lives of Others, secured rights to the film’s title track (also the name of the band’s breakthrough 1989 album) directly from R&B music producer and performer Kevin Liles, who composed the original version of “Girl You Know It’s True” with his Baltimore DJ crew Numarx in 1986. He brought on Jasmin Davis, daughter of the late singer John Davis, and Brad Howell — the two were the true voices of MILLI VANILLI — as associate producers and development consultants. Several of the band’s songs were available to license through Sony Music.

“But then there were the songs that Frank [Farian] produced, and he had certain rights, and rights of refusal,” says Berg. “Sorting that out was a bit more complicated.”

Berg flew back and forth to Miami to try and convince the now 82-year-old Farian — “a very headstrong character, who has a very specific take on the history of Milli Vanilli” — to sign over his rights. “He kept us on edge. I was at the airport ready to fly back and 30 minutes before my plane took off, Farian called and we did the deal.”

Having original music rights for a pop biopic definitely boosts a project’s profile — in addition to the built-in audience of the artists’ fans, the film’s soundtrack, with all those original tracks, can be a lucrative revenue stream. (Sony Music drops the Girl You Know Its True soundtrack on Nov. 24.)

But to secure the approval of the original artists, producers are often required to make edits to ensure an artists-approved, that is sanitized, version of their life story. Bohemian Rhapsody was criticized for its PG treatment of Queen frontman Freddy Mercury’s sex life. Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis skirted around the King of Rock and Roll’s treatment, some would say abuse, of his wife, Priscilla Presley (the subject of Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla, which was made without original Elvis songs.)

Fabrice Morvan says he declined to participate in Girl You Know It’s True because of Farian’s involvement with the film.

“The reason I chose not to participate in the MILLI VANILLI biopic out of Germany is because I did not want to be involved with Frank Farian,” Morvan said in an email to The Hollywood Reporter.

But, despite Farian’s involvement, Berg says Girl You Know It’s True is “not the Frank Farian version” of the story. “We wanted to focus on Rob and Fab, the two faces of MILLI VANILLI. Frank Farian is an important third figure and he has his own take on what happened, but we wanted to stay independent, to be able to tell this story from many different perspectives.”

Girl You Know It’s True has made it over the line ahead of more prominent U.S. attempts to tell the MILLI VANILLI story, including a long-gestating attempt by disgraced director/producer Brett Ratner. The Rush Hour and Tower Heist filmmaker had planned the music biopic as his return to filmmaking after facing sexual misconduct and harassment claims by multiple women including Olivia Munn and Natasha Henstridge. (Ratner has denied the claims.) In early 2021, Millennium Media came on board to co-produce the project and handle sales but quickly pulled out. The project’s current status is unknown.

Girl You Know It’s True rolls out in the wake of Luke Korem’s well-received documentary MILLI VANILLI, which premiered at Tribeca this year and bowed on Paramount+ last month. Berg and Verhoeven were associative producers on the doc, which was produced by MRC Non-Fiction. (The Hollywood Reporter is part of PMRC holdings, a joint venture between PMC and MRC).

“We think the film and the documentary can exist side by side, they complement each other,” says Berg. “Both tell different sides of this incredibly, fascinating story of ’80s music history.”

In an interview with www.collider.com Editor-in-Chief Steven Weintraub, 41-year-old actor and director Matthias Schweighöfer spoke about his recent and upcoming work in film and television.

The star of one of the most popular Netflix series "Army of Thieves" and a number of successful feature films said that he is very pleased with the way his career is developing. In addition to talking about an important dramatic role in the new television series Swimmers, as well as working with Hollywood director Christopher Nolan, Mattias noted his role as producer Frank Farian in the upcoming musical biopic Girl, You Know It's True.

In Netflix’s The Swimmers, the sophomore feature film of director Sally El Hosaini, Hosaini and co-writer Jack Thorne (Enola Holmes 2) chronicle the harrowing journey of Syrian refugees Yusra and Sara Mardini, played by Nathalie and Manal Issa, respectively. Based on true events, The Swimmers depicts the sisters’ inspiring odyssey from their war-torn home country to Germany where Yusra trained to be an Olympic swimmer, defying all impossible odds in their way. In the film, rising star, producer, and director Matthias Schweighöfer portrays real-life swim coach Sven Spannenkrebs who helped prepare Yusra to qualify for the 2016 Olympics in Rio.

During his interview with Collider’s Editor-in-Chief Steve Weintraub, Schweighöfer shares the importance of telling the Mardinis’ story “about hopes and dreams and passion,” about Hosaini’s vision for the film, and working alongside her and the Issa’s to do the story justice. He also talks about working with director Christopher Nolan on Oppenheimer, as well as his role in Netflix’s Heart of Stone with Gal Gadot, and his own directing career, teasing a new project in the works. COLLIDER: I want to start with congratulations on this movie. I didn't know what I was going to get when I watched it. It's really, really an important story and it's so well done.

MATTHIAS SCHWEIGHÖFER: Yeah, thank you. I think it's a great film. It's an inspiring story.

Something I wanted to touch on is that I thought Sally [El Hosaini] did such a great job directing. Can you talk about what she brought to the table? Because the way she told the story was so excellent.

SCHWEIGHÖFER: Yeah. She came up with that story, and she wanted to make a film about girls growing up like she did when she grew up in Cairo in the '90s. Girls, fun, it's ordinary people and she had a vision to tell a story about hopes and dreams and passion.

You are not a huge part of this movie, but you are a critical part of this movie. What is it like coming in to be a big part of the third act of the film?

SCHWEIGHÖFER: It's funny, because we shot the third act, we shot all these scenes at the beginning of the shoot. Then they went to shoot the rest of the film. So I think it's a pretty important part because it’s when they reach Germany, the safe place, the safe country, it’s nice to see Yusra Mardini. It's all about the Olympics, and the swimming, and still fulfilling her dreams and wanting to achieve something great because of how she was raised with her dad. I think it's super important for the film because, after the whole crazy journey, they're survivors, human beings, and she has dreams, so she fights for them and I think it's great.

Were you happy you didn't really have to train for this movie to do the swimming? It's like standing on the sidelines, training them.

SCHWEIGHÖFER: I trained a lot, I worked on my calmness, and on my smile, and on being a very tolerant coach. The girls, they went through a tough process of swimming and working out. That's always great to jump into characters like this, I like that process.

You've directed a number of films. Most recently, I believe, Army of Thieves. I'm curious, you've worked recently as an actor on a number of projects and some high-profile things. What have you learned over the last few years that you want to take with you as a filmmaker to your future endeavors?

SCHWEIGHÖFER: That first, it's always about the vision and that acting has to be real, but still in a film. You know what I mean? For example, the work with Chris Nolan was so interesting, and I love him so much. The same with Sally because she was so calm and so nice, and she always tried to focus on, "Hey, how can I reach my goals by making them crystal clear? Hey, you have to let it go and follow my vision." I think it was a great learning process for me.

Do you feel like, in the last few years, you've won the actor's lottery? In terms of getting to work with Nolan, being in this big action Netflix film with Gal Gadot, the Milli Vanilli thing. There's a lot going on and I'm wondering if you are able to appreciate, "Oh my God?”

SCHWEIGHÖFER: I think every day I try to be really thankful because I was born in the east of Germany. When the wall came down, I always dreamt of this big, hairy goal. Dream big and fight for your dreams, fight for your goals, never give up. Believe in your team and people, in the stars, in energy. To be honest, I'm so happy for what I can do now in my age. I'm not 25 anymore, I'm 26. I'm really happy because I'm just getting started and that's great, it's a great feeling.

I have to ask you, what is it like getting the phone call from Nolan, or whoever, saying, "We would like you to be in a Chris Nolan movie?"

SCHWEIGHÖFER: It was so surreal because I did a casting for him two years before, and I really effed it up, and it wasn't a good casting, and I think I was horrible. Then to receive that call, "Hey, you're in." I was so happy. The weirdest thing was, I immediately called Hans Zimmer and Zack Snyder and told them, "Hey, I will be in Chris's next film." They both were like, "Oh my God, say hi to him." That was really crazy. That was, to be honest, that was really, really weird. But great.

Yeah, I can't imagine. The thing that I'm most looking forward to with that film is, not only that it's a Nolan movie, but I believe he shot most of it in IMAX and I cannot wait to see what he's cooking up.

SCHWEIGHÖFER: Yeah. I mean, it looked fantastic. All these actors are amazing. Cillian Murphy, he was fantastic. Even I can wait to see the film. I can't wait to see the film.

I know you were involved with this Milli Vanilli movie, Girl You Know It's True. For people that don't realize it's an incredible story, can you talk about what it's about? Who you play? Because it's a crazy story.

SCHWEIGHÖFER: I mean, the movie is about the band Milli Vanilli, and the story behind them is that the producer I play, called Frank Farian, he invented this band. He had a second band, a real band, who were the real singers, the real musicians. He found these two good-looking dancers, made a band of it, and sold it to the world. They received a Grammy, they had three number-one hits in the world, in the US. It's insane that everything was fake, it was fake. I can't wait for the world to see that film. I think I'm a really smart-looking, good producer. I have long hair, the '90s, that's fun.

Oh, I really can't wait to see it either. Listen, I got to stop with you. I'm just going to say, I'm really happy for you and congrats on The Swimmers, because it's really a fantastic and important film.

SCHWEIGHÖFER: Steve, let's make this every year. Next time we see each other on Heart of Stone, then it will be Milli Vanilli.

What's funny is that if I had more time, I would've brought up Heart of Stone. Listen, there's only so much time. Again, I'm really happy for you and I do hope you're directing again, soon.

European major LEONINE Studios reveals first look on its international biopic GIRL YOU KNOW IT’S TRUE, produced by Wiedemann & Berg Film.

After a year of intense casting in five countries, newcomers Tijan Njie from Germany and Elan Ben Ali from France are set to portray the lead roles of the Milli Vanilli frontmen Robert Pilatus and Fabrice Morvan, the top-charting pop and R&B duo. Matthias Schweighöfer (Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer”, “Heart of Stone”, “Army of the Dead”) is starring as German music producer Frank Farian. The cast also includes Graham Rogers (“Ray Donovan”, “The Kominsky Method”, “Atypical”) as Milli Vanilli’s US assistant Todd and Bella Dayne (“Humans”, “Troy – Fall of a City”) as Milli, Farian’s right-hand.

The film is centered around the true story of the notorious scandal involving dancers Robert Pilatus’ and Fabrice Morvan’s rise to fame in the late 1980s as pop sensation Milli Vanilli. Orchestrated by music producer Frank Farian, they became global stars with three No. 1 hits in the US. But only a small circle of insiders know that the duo is not singing but lip syncing to the voices of two other artists. At the height of their fame, Milli Vanilli win the Grammy Award but the situation behind the scenes escalates and the pressure on Rob and Fab grows. When the truth is revealed, they stare into the abyss while the world witnesses one of the biggest scandals in music history.

Multi award-winning filmmaker Simon Verhoeven is directing, based on his original screenplay GIRL YOU KNOW IT’S TRUE. Quirin Berg and Max Wiedemann, producers of the Academy Award® winning film THE LIVES OF OTHERS, the two-time Academy Award® nominated film NEVER LOOK AWAY and the groundbreaking Netflix Original Series DARK are producing. Producer Kirstin Winkler (“2012”, “10,000 BC”, “Anonymous”) is overseeing production.

Principal photography takes place in Munich and Berlin (Germany), Capetown (South Africa) and Los Angeles (USA). Filming will wrap in December 2022. The film follows a true language approach and is shot almost entirely in English. The title echoes Milli Vanilli’s 1988 break-out hit GIRL YOU KNOW IT’S TRUE, originally written by the US Hip-Hop group Numarx and later covered by successful music producer Frank Farian.

Kevin Liles, member of Numarx, legendary co-founder and CEO of music company 300 Entertainment is executive producing alongside co-producers Simon Verhoeven, Frank Farian and Stefan Gärtner. Associate producers are Jasmin Davis, daughter of the late John Davis, and Brad Howell, who were the true voices of Milli Vanilli and invaluable consultants in the development phase. Carmen Pilatus, sister of the late Rob Pilatus, Milli Vanilli’s former assistant Todd Headlee, and Ingrid Segieth aka Milli, Frank Farian’s right-hand, are also attached as associate producers.

Writer and director Simon Verhoeven says: “GIRL YOU KNOW IT’S TRUE is captivating on so many levels. It not only tells the spectacular rise of two underdogs making it to the zenith of showbiz within one summer, it also gives a fascinating glimpse behind the scenes of that illusory world of fame and its sometimes tragic and unscrupulous machinations. Independently from LEONINE Studios’ feature film, US entertainment company MRC is producing a documentary on Milli Vanilli, directed by Luke Korem. Korem also serves as a producer via his Keep on Running Pictures. Bradley Jackson and Fulwell 73 also produce. Hanif Abdurraqib will executive produce. Quirin Berg, Max Wiedemann, Simon Verhoeven and Kirstin Winkler are serving as associate producers on this documentary project as well.

Recall that the United States is also preparing its own adaptation of this sensational story. Renowned Hollywood director Brett Ratner has been planning to shoot his own biopic about Milli Vanilli for a long time, but these plans were postponed indefinitely due to the scandal, inflated by the #metoo feminist movement, which accused Ratner of sexually harassing several actresses. In the spring of this year, the director categorically denied the accusations and said that he did not refuse to work on a film about Milli Vanilli, despite the break in relations with a partner film distribution company. Крупнейшая европейская кинокомпания LEONINE Studios представляет первую информацию о своём международном проекте: биографический фильм GIRL YOU KNOW IT’S TRUE, который производится совместно с компанией Wiedemann & Berg Film.

После года напряжённых кастингов в 5-ти странах дебютанты Тиджан Нджи из Германии и Элан Бэн Али из Франции исполнят главные роли фронтменов Milli Vanilli Роберта Пилатуса и Фабриса Морвана, знаменитого POP/R&B-дуэта. Матиас Швайгхёфер («Оппенгеймер», «Каменное сердце», «Армия мертвецов» Кристофера Нолана) сыграет немецкого музыкального продюсера Фрэнка Фариана. В актёрский состав также входят Грэм Роджерс («Рэй Донован», «Метод Комински», «Атипичный») в роли американского менеджера Milli Vanilli Тодда и Белла Дейн («Люди», «Троя. Падение города») в роли Милли, производственного координатора и "правой руки" Фариана.

В основе фильма реальная история печально известного скандала с участием танцоров Роберта Пилатуса и Фабриса Морвана, прославившихся в конце 1980-х-начале 90-х годов как поп-сенсация Milli Vanilli. Под руководством музыкального продюсера Фрэнка Фариана они стали мировыми звёздами с тремя хитами №1 в США. Но лишь небольшой круг инсайдеров знает, что дуэт не поёт, а лишь подпевает голосам двух других вокалистов. На пике своей славы Milli Vanilli выигрывают премию Grammy, но ситуация за кулисами накаляется, и давление на Роба и Фаба растёт. Когда правда раскрыта, они смотрят в бездну, в то время как мир становится свидетелем одного из самых больших скандалов в истории музыки.

Кинорежиссер Саймон Верховен, обладатель множества наград, ставит фильм по своему оригинальному сценарию «ДЕВУШКА, ТЫ ЗНАЕШЬ, ЭТО ПРАВДА». Квирин Берг и Макс Видеманн, продюсеры получившего премию «Оскар» фильма «ЖИЗНЬ ДРУГИХ», дважды номинированного на премию «Оскар» фильма «НИКОГДА НЕ ОГЛЯДЫВАЙСЯ» и новаторского оригинального сериала Netflix «Тьма». Основные съёмки проходят в Мюнхене и Берлине (Германия), Кейптауне (Южная Африка) и Лос-Анджелесе (США). Съёмки завершатся в декабре 2022 года. Фильм основан на истинном языковом подходе и почти полностью снят на английском языке. Название перекликается с прорывным хитом Milli Vanilli 1988 года GIRL YOU KNOW IT’S TRUE, первоначально записанным американской хип-хоп группой Numarx, а затем переработанным успешным музыкальным продюсером Фрэнком Фарианом.

Кевин Лайлс (Kevin Liles), член Numarx, легендарный соучредитель и генеральный директор музыкального лэйбла 300 Entertainment, является исполнительным продюсером вместе с сопродюсерами Саймоном Верховеном, Фрэнком Фарианом и Стефаном Гертнером (Stefan Gärtner). Независимо от LEONINE Studios, американская развлекательная компания MRC снимает документальный фильм о Milli Vanilli, режиссёром которого является Люк Корем (Luke Korem). Напомним, что в США также готовится своя экранизация этой нашумевшей истории. Известный голливудский режиссёр Брэтт Ратнер давно собирался снимать собственный байопик о Milli Vanilli, однако эти планы были сдвинуты на неопределённый срок из-за скандала, раздутого феминистским движением #metoo, обвинившем Ратнера в сексуальных домогательствах по отношению к нескольким актрисам. Весной этого года режиссёр категорически отверг обвинения и заявил, что не отказывается от работы над фильмом о Milli Vanilli, несмотря на разрыв отношений с партнёрской кинопрокатной компанией. СМИ сообщали, что Ратнер якобы нашёл независимые источники финансирования для реализации своего проекта.

Новая CD-компиляция MILLI VANILLI вышла на Sony Music Switzerland

В дополнение к информации, опубликованной накануне, сообщаем что анонсированный сборник "Girl You Know It's True - The Best Of MILLI VANILLI" вышел не только в цифровом формате mp3, но и на физических носителях.
CD-версия опубликована на дочернем филиале Sony Music Switzerland (Camden).
В Швейцарии альбом поступил в продажу 26 июля (как и цифровой релиз), а в другие страны поставки будут осуществляться по импорту.
В немецких интернет-магазинах заказать релиз можно уже сейчас. А в США новый CD поступит в торговые сети с 6 августа.

SOCIAL NETWORKK - наследники MILLI VANILLI?

Американский бойз-бэнд SOCIAL NETWORKK (в "побуквенном" переложении на русский СОЦИАЛЬНАЯ СЕТТЬ) состоит из четырёх очень разных парней с одной похожей целью: производить самую лучшую музыку своего поколения.
Чтобы найти ключ к успеху и друг друга, квартет использовал последние технологические достижения, такие как интернет и социальные сети.
Ребята (Ruba Wilson, Max Ehrich, Cy Jones, Jobob Taeleifi) познакомились в сети и выяснили что у них схожая мотивация и музыкальные пристрастия. После того как ими было "перелопачено" и проанализировано огромное количество хитов, хранящихся на портале youtube, молодые люди решили что их дебютной работой должен стать бестселлер конца 80-х "Girl You Know It's True" от MILLI VANILLI.
"Эта музыка "старой школы" имеет большой драйв и до сих пор волнует людей", - говорят участники квартета - "Именно поэтому мы решили начать с этой песни, исполнив её в соответствии с современными музыкальными новациями".

CDL Exclusive: Interview With Boy Band Social Networkk


Describing itself as a lover of “feel good music” Social Networkk is comprised of four very different guys with one very similar goal – to produce some of the best hand-slappin’, hair-whippin’ pop music of its generation.
And it’s fitting the quartet used the technological methods of their generation to find each other. Ruba Wilson, Max Ehrich, Cy Jones and Jobob Taeleifi may be a boy band but they didn’t come together in some micromanaging producer’s office, rather they searched for their sound and each other using social media sites (hence the name).
“I just thought what better place to find new face faces/voices than online…. that’s where it is. I’ve always wanted to be in a boy band. I started off as a host for several red carpets. etc. and I met Max at this Disney Movie premiere and we always stayed in contact via Twitter/Facebook,” Ruba said. “One day I said to Max I wanna start a band would you want to be a part and he was immediately on board. From there, we went on the search via Twitter/Facebook and found Cy and Jobob.”
And Social Networkk was born. After long periods of communication online, the boys met for the first time in the studio this year to record their first single, a remake of the Milli Vanilli monster hit, “Girl You Know It’s True”. The band chose the song because they insist it has the “feel good” groove that exemplifies where the band currently stands in its short life… and because Ruba looks like he jumped right off the Milli Vanilla CD cover.
“I swear – everywhere I went I would always hear people say ‘Yo, Milli Vanilli!’” Ruba explained. “I had not a clue who they were until I got invited to see Prince in concert and there’s a section in his show where he calls people up on stage and he just so happened to call me up on stage and said, ‘Milli Vanilli, is that you?’ And the crowd lost it and the rest is history. We just wanted stray away from the typical first single people would expect from us; we wanted to take it back old school when they did feel good records, and we hope you guys can agree with us Milli Vanilli’s ‘Girl You Know It’s True’ was a feel good record then and still is now.”
Timing played a major role in the genesis of Social Networkk. Boy bands are making a comeback with the likes of The Wanted and One Direction. As more and more bands step up to grab a piece of the pie, originality and innovation become increasingly important. Social Networkk says it will introduce both.
“History repeats itself and we just so happened to start a boy band during that resurgence. We aren’t your typical cookie cutter boy band. We feel as if we represent the world we live in,” the group said. “We’d like to think our differences within the band play a big role in our differences between other bands. We all come from different backgrounds and have different looks and sounds. It’s an interesting mix overall. Really as cheesy as this may sound, we want to inspire people everywhere and let them know that you honestly can do anything you set your mind on. We weren’t ever the popular kids in school but doing what we love takes the cake cake cake cake cake!”
With one single down, the band hints at recording its first album and organizing a tour to go along with it. And you better believe you’ll hear all about it on your twitter, facebook, instagram, and other social media pages!
“Social Media is all around us! It’s the new wave of communication. Thank God for Twitter, Facebook and countless other sites,” the group said. “It has basically broken the barrier between fans and the artist. A few years ago it used to be ‘fans’ and the ‘artist’ but now they are our friends. If we can’t decide on what to eat or what to wear they can give us their opinion or whatever. We’re sure they will. We must say, it’s a dope idea!”
