"Rasputin" keeps breaking records and "Be My Lover" went viral on Shazam

On February 1, 2023, Sony Music-owned record label Nitron released an official announcement that Boney M.'s 2021 remixed track "Rasputin" has surpassed half a billion plays on streaming platforms. According to the German internet portal smago.de, which specializes in show business news, this is by far the biggest hit for the Sony/Nitron label. The original recording, released by the producer and founder of the Boney M. project Frank Farian back in 1978, immediately became incredibly popular on all continents. This year, the musical bestseller celebrates its 45th anniversary by setting another record.

In an interview with the trade magazine MusikWoche, Thorsten Sack, Senior Director of Product Distribution for Sony/Nitron, made no secret of his delight, calling "Rasputin" a real international hit.

Simultaneously, LA BOUCHE, another Frank Farian's project, is making a comeback on Shazam and Apple/iTunes digital music platforms with the 1995 hit "Be My Lover". This week the track is on the charts in 12 countries, including Germany, Austria, Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, Switzerland, Canada, Ukraine, Libya, Paraguay, Belarus and Costa Rica.

At the same time, LA BOUCHE's debut album "Sweet Dreams" (1995) has been in the TOP 50 of the Libyan iTunes segment for almost a year, reaching N1 last summer.

The electronic version of the Jamaica Observer newspaper published updated statistics on the sales of Boney M.'s single "Rasputin", which again became a super hit 43 years after the first publication:

"Last year, British DJ and producer Majestic dusted off the old Boney M hit ‘Rasputin’ from 1978 and turned it into a hit all over again.

‘Rasputin’, billed as Majestic x Boney M, gained a new following after its resurgence on TikTok and charted on several pop charts worldwide including in Switzerland, Sweden, Slovakia, Romania, Norway, Netherlands, Lithuania, Hungary, Canada, Belgium and Austria.

In the United Kingdom, it peaked at number 11, number one in Poland and number 10 on the Billboard Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart. This was the song’s first time ever charting in the US.

‘Rasputin’ was certified platinum for sales exceeding 600,000 units in the United Kingdom. The certification was issued on September 30 by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI).

‘Rasputin’ was first released on 28 August 1978 as the second single from Boney M’s third studio album Nightflight to Venus. Written by the group's creator Frank Farian, along with George Reyam and Fred Jay, it is a song about Grigori Rasputin, a friend and advisor of Tsar Nicholas II of Russia and his family during the early 20th century. The song describes Rasputin as a playboy, mystical healer, and political manipulator.

In 1978, the original version of ‘Rasputin’ peaked at number two in the UK, number one in Australia, Austria and Germany, and made the top ten in Argentina, Canada, Ireland, Norway, Netherlands and Switzerland.

It was certified platinum in Australia and Canada and gold in Netherlands and the UK back then.

Last year’s remixed version of ‘Rasputin’ has so far been certified platinum in Australia, Italy and Switzerland, and gold in Belgium and Poland.

Boney M consisted of Jamaicans Marcia Barrett and Liz Mitchell, Maizie Williams from Montserrat and Bobby Farrell from Aruba.

The group’s other hits include ‘By the Rivers of Babylon’, ‘Mary’s Boy Child’, ‘Ma Baker’ (later sampled by Lady Gaga in Bad Romance), ‘Brown Girl in the Ring’ and ‘Daddy Cool’."

Even on the other side of the world, in New Zealand, the single charted for 14 weeks.

This track has been published several times as part of various compilations of the best hits in many countries of the world, as well as on the remix album of Boney M. "Rasputin - Lover Of The Russian Queen", which was released on Frank Farian's MCI record label.

Majestic & Boney M. "Rasputin" entered the UK Top 40 Summer Hits and achieved gold status in several European countries

The famous Boney M's composition reached its peak value (N2) in 1978, and a new remix from DJ Majestic was able to reach 11th place in the UK single chart. The original version managed to stay in the UK TOP 100 for 10 weeks, while the 2021 remix has been in the top 100 for 21 weeks. Together with another remix version of 1989, the total time of the hit "Rasputin" in the UK TOP 100 has reached 32 weeks. And it seems that this is not the limit. Recall that the 1978 album "Nightflight to Venus" with this song stayed in the UK TOP 100 for 65 weeks (№1 for 4 weeks)!

Thus, "Rasputin" may well claim the title of one of the longest-playing hits of Boney M on the British Isles.

As far as the rest of Europe is concerned, this song continues its ascent in a number of markets, both in the West and in the East of the continent. For example, in Switzerland, after a certain decline, in the last 3 weeks there is a rise again (from 42nd to 31st position). As a result, the new remix-version of "Rasputin" sensationally hits the TOP10 Billboard Hot Dance/Electronic Songs, and today the original version it has reached the TOP10 in the UK iTunes segment.

The German press reports that box office receipts from the sale of the song and royalties for its use on various Internet platforms have reached at least half a million US dollars in the last couple of months alone. At the same time, we must not forget that the #rasputinchallenge in TikTok has been going on for at least six months.

The monitoring service KWORB, which reflects in real time statistics of the number of downloads of music works on the leading Internet platform Apple Music/iTunes, states the steady growth of the popularity of this track on a global scale.
