70th Anniversary of the UK Music Charts: The Rich Legacy of Frank Farian

Gilla "Rasputin": the premiere of a new video from FFFclub

Today on our blog, the premiere of a new video version of the hit "Rasputin" performed by the European pop star of the 1970s-80s Gilla. This bestseller was originally recorded in English by West German producer Frank Farian's most successful project, Boney M., in the first half of 1978, and a German version was published a little later, performed by another of Faran's wards, the Austrian singer Gilla (real name Gisela Wüchiger).

The concert performance of the pop icon of the disco era was filmed during her performance in one of the night dance clubs in Yekaterinburg (Russia) in 1997. Then she made a club tour in this city, accompanied by her husband and producer Helmut Rulofs (one of Frank Faran's closest assistants) and daughter Nadia. Local BBF Studio subsequently produced a special video program about Gilla's career in the music business and her tours in Russia.

At the end of 2022, thanks to the enthusiasm of our fan club members, a new video clip for this song was released. It should be noted that underestimated in its time, today the German version of the immortal hit is perceived no worse than the original.

Famous German actor Matthias Schweighöfer spoke about his role as producer Frank Farian in the biopic about pop sensation MILLI VANILLI

In an interview with www.collider.com Editor-in-Chief Steven Weintraub, 41-year-old actor and director Matthias Schweighöfer spoke about his recent and upcoming work in film and television.

The star of one of the most popular Netflix series "Army of Thieves" and a number of successful feature films said that he is very pleased with the way his career is developing. In addition to talking about an important dramatic role in the new television series Swimmers, as well as working with Hollywood director Christopher Nolan, Mattias noted his role as producer Frank Farian in the upcoming musical biopic Girl, You Know It's True.

In Netflix’s The Swimmers, the sophomore feature film of director Sally El Hosaini, Hosaini and co-writer Jack Thorne (Enola Holmes 2) chronicle the harrowing journey of Syrian refugees Yusra and Sara Mardini, played by Nathalie and Manal Issa, respectively. Based on true events, The Swimmers depicts the sisters’ inspiring odyssey from their war-torn home country to Germany where Yusra trained to be an Olympic swimmer, defying all impossible odds in their way. In the film, rising star, producer, and director Matthias Schweighöfer portrays real-life swim coach Sven Spannenkrebs who helped prepare Yusra to qualify for the 2016 Olympics in Rio.

During his interview with Collider’s Editor-in-Chief Steve Weintraub, Schweighöfer shares the importance of telling the Mardinis’ story “about hopes and dreams and passion,” about Hosaini’s vision for the film, and working alongside her and the Issa’s to do the story justice. He also talks about working with director Christopher Nolan on Oppenheimer, as well as his role in Netflix’s Heart of Stone with Gal Gadot, and his own directing career, teasing a new project in the works. COLLIDER: I want to start with congratulations on this movie. I didn't know what I was going to get when I watched it. It's really, really an important story and it's so well done.

MATTHIAS SCHWEIGHÖFER: Yeah, thank you. I think it's a great film. It's an inspiring story.

Something I wanted to touch on is that I thought Sally [El Hosaini] did such a great job directing. Can you talk about what she brought to the table? Because the way she told the story was so excellent.

SCHWEIGHÖFER: Yeah. She came up with that story, and she wanted to make a film about girls growing up like she did when she grew up in Cairo in the '90s. Girls, fun, it's ordinary people and she had a vision to tell a story about hopes and dreams and passion.

You are not a huge part of this movie, but you are a critical part of this movie. What is it like coming in to be a big part of the third act of the film?

SCHWEIGHÖFER: It's funny, because we shot the third act, we shot all these scenes at the beginning of the shoot. Then they went to shoot the rest of the film. So I think it's a pretty important part because it’s when they reach Germany, the safe place, the safe country, it’s nice to see Yusra Mardini. It's all about the Olympics, and the swimming, and still fulfilling her dreams and wanting to achieve something great because of how she was raised with her dad. I think it's super important for the film because, after the whole crazy journey, they're survivors, human beings, and she has dreams, so she fights for them and I think it's great.

Were you happy you didn't really have to train for this movie to do the swimming? It's like standing on the sidelines, training them.

SCHWEIGHÖFER: I trained a lot, I worked on my calmness, and on my smile, and on being a very tolerant coach. The girls, they went through a tough process of swimming and working out. That's always great to jump into characters like this, I like that process.

You've directed a number of films. Most recently, I believe, Army of Thieves. I'm curious, you've worked recently as an actor on a number of projects and some high-profile things. What have you learned over the last few years that you want to take with you as a filmmaker to your future endeavors?

SCHWEIGHÖFER: That first, it's always about the vision and that acting has to be real, but still in a film. You know what I mean? For example, the work with Chris Nolan was so interesting, and I love him so much. The same with Sally because she was so calm and so nice, and she always tried to focus on, "Hey, how can I reach my goals by making them crystal clear? Hey, you have to let it go and follow my vision." I think it was a great learning process for me.

Do you feel like, in the last few years, you've won the actor's lottery? In terms of getting to work with Nolan, being in this big action Netflix film with Gal Gadot, the Milli Vanilli thing. There's a lot going on and I'm wondering if you are able to appreciate, "Oh my God?”

SCHWEIGHÖFER: I think every day I try to be really thankful because I was born in the east of Germany. When the wall came down, I always dreamt of this big, hairy goal. Dream big and fight for your dreams, fight for your goals, never give up. Believe in your team and people, in the stars, in energy. To be honest, I'm so happy for what I can do now in my age. I'm not 25 anymore, I'm 26. I'm really happy because I'm just getting started and that's great, it's a great feeling.

I have to ask you, what is it like getting the phone call from Nolan, or whoever, saying, "We would like you to be in a Chris Nolan movie?"

SCHWEIGHÖFER: It was so surreal because I did a casting for him two years before, and I really effed it up, and it wasn't a good casting, and I think I was horrible. Then to receive that call, "Hey, you're in." I was so happy. The weirdest thing was, I immediately called Hans Zimmer and Zack Snyder and told them, "Hey, I will be in Chris's next film." They both were like, "Oh my God, say hi to him." That was really crazy. That was, to be honest, that was really, really weird. But great.

Yeah, I can't imagine. The thing that I'm most looking forward to with that film is, not only that it's a Nolan movie, but I believe he shot most of it in IMAX and I cannot wait to see what he's cooking up.

SCHWEIGHÖFER: Yeah. I mean, it looked fantastic. All these actors are amazing. Cillian Murphy, he was fantastic. Even I can wait to see the film. I can't wait to see the film.

I know you were involved with this Milli Vanilli movie, Girl You Know It's True. For people that don't realize it's an incredible story, can you talk about what it's about? Who you play? Because it's a crazy story.

SCHWEIGHÖFER: I mean, the movie is about the band Milli Vanilli, and the story behind them is that the producer I play, called Frank Farian, he invented this band. He had a second band, a real band, who were the real singers, the real musicians. He found these two good-looking dancers, made a band of it, and sold it to the world. They received a Grammy, they had three number-one hits in the world, in the US. It's insane that everything was fake, it was fake. I can't wait for the world to see that film. I think I'm a really smart-looking, good producer. I have long hair, the '90s, that's fun.

Oh, I really can't wait to see it either. Listen, I got to stop with you. I'm just going to say, I'm really happy for you and congrats on The Swimmers, because it's really a fantastic and important film.

SCHWEIGHÖFER: Steve, let's make this every year. Next time we see each other on Heart of Stone, then it will be Milli Vanilli.

In February 1975, the debut single "Baby, Do You Wanna Bump?" appeared on the shelves of European music stores. Accordingly, in 2024 we will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the birth of an idea that will lead to the emergence of a true symbol of the brilliant disco era. And although the stellar composition of the group was formed only at the beginning of 1976, it was 1974 that can be considered a symbolic starting point for the beginning of the exciting story of Boney M's ascent to the musical Olympus.

In connection with the approaching half-century anniversary, reports of upcoming celebrations are already beginning to appear. First on the list is a special show based on the band's biggest hits. This musical will be presented by Frank Serr Showservice International, which in 2017 was involved in the distribution of the musical DADDY COOL in the German-speaking countries of Europe. Apparently, the updated show will include only Boney M. hits, without additional tracks from other successful Farian's projects such as ERUPTION, MILLI VANILLI, LA BOUCHE and NO MERCY.

Boney M. has been named the most successful black band of all time. Liz Mitchell gave an interview to SKY NEWS in connection with the achievement of the hit "Rasputin" platinum status in the UK.

 

Millions of new fans have discovered the group thanks to their 1978 hit Rasputin featuring in a TikTok dance challenge that went viral last year  “resulting in 8.93 million "Rasputin" TikTok dance videos created worldwide, viewed 22 billion times”.

It also earned them the auspicious title of “most successful black group of all time”.

The lead vocalist of the group, Liz Mitchell, got to share her excitement about this global revival when she was interviewed by Sky’s Kay Burley Tuesday, November 7th.

The CD-bootleg of the album "Fight, Fight, Fight" by ERUPTION went on sale in the Russian music market, but not for long

Fans have long been waiting for the official re-release of the now rare album "Fight, Fight, Fight" (1980) by the British-Caribbean quintet ERUPTION, but so far it has not appeared on digital media. Unlike the first two albums, which became available on CD in a remastered version in 2016, it was not particularly outstanding from a commercial point of view, but very interesting in terms of the quality of the musical material.

Recall that Frank Farian, who oversaw the project, entrusted the production of "Fight, Fighth, Fight" to an employee of his company FAR Music, Rainer Maria Ehrhardt, who assisted him in creating the first albums of the quintet. At this time, the main soloist changed in the group. The "calling card" of ERUPTION, the legendary Precious Wilson, left her team to start a solo career under the guidance of Farian. She was replaced by a very talented singer Kim Davis, who, by that time, managed to get the title of the best performer in the club scene in Britain. Unfortunately, shortly after the release of the album, Kim died of a cerebral hemorrhage in a traffic accident. Because of this, the promotional campaign of the album was actually disrupted and the producers had to urgently look for a new vocalist. The new voice of ERUPTION was Jany Jane James, who initially had to perform on television to the soundtrack of her predecessor.

One way or another, but the musical content of the album was very innovative, given some of the creative stagnation in disco music at the turn of the decade. The sonorous and piercing voice of Kim Davis opened up the potential of the group from an unexpected side, when the musicians decided to change the style, placing more emphasis on such directions as funk, soul and gospel. Of course, there were classic dance hits like "Go, Johnnie, Go" and "Fight, Fight, Fight" as well, but overall the album stood out from the usual disco production of the period.

Unfortunately, today's major music labels, accustomed to operating in millions of copies, did not show due attention to this work, considering the re-release of the album not a very profitable business. Although most of the tracks from "Fight, Fight, Fight" have been re-released on CD as part of various compilations and as bonus tracks in previous remastered ERUPTION albums, it has never been released in full on CD. Music pirates filled this gap by releasing a bootleg of quite good quality on the market.

"Fight, Fight, Fight" has recently appeared in the largest russian online store ozon.ru and the entire batch of these CDs was completely sold out literally within a few hours...

Официального переиздания раритетного ныне альбома "Fight, Fight, Fight" (1980) британско-карибского квинтета ERUPTION поклонники ждали давно, но до сих пор он так и не появился на цифровых носителях. В отличие от двух первых альбомов, которые стали доступны на CD в ремастированной версии в 2016-м году, с коммерческой точки зрения он не был особо выдающимся, однако весьма интересен в плане качества музыкального материала.

Напомним, что Фрэнк Фариан (Frank Farian), курировавший проект, доверил продюсирование "Fight, Fighth, Fight" сотруднику своей компании FAR Music Райнеру Эрхардту (Rainer Maria Ehrhardt), который ассистировал ему при создании первых альбомов квинтета. В это время в группе сменилась главная солистка. "Визитная карточка" ERUPTION, легендарная Прэшес Уилсон, покинула свою команду, чтобы начать сольную карьеру под руководством Фариана. Её сменила очень талантливая певица Ким Дэвис (Kim Davis), которая, к тому времени, успела получить титл лучшей исполнительницы на клубной сцене Британии. К сожалению, вскоре после выпуска альбома, Ким погибла от кровоизлияния в мозг в результате дорожного инцидента. Из-за этого промо-кампания альбома была фактически сорвана и продюсерам пришлось срочно искать новую вокалисту. Новым голосом ERUPTION стала Джэйн Йохен (сценический псевдоним Jany Jane James), которой поначалу пришлось выступать на телевидении под фонограмму своей предшественницы.

Так или иначе, но музыкальное наполнение альбома было весьма новаторским, учитывая общий творчески застой в диско-музыке на рубеже десятилетий. Звонкий и пронзительный голос Ким Дэвис открыл потенциал группы с неожиданной стороны, когда музыканты решили изменить стиль, сделав больший акцент на таких направлениях как фанк, соул и госпел. Конечно, здесь также были классические танцевальные хиты типа "Go, Johnnie, Go" и титульной "Fight, Fight, Fight", однако в целом альбом заметно выделялся на фоне привычной диско-продукции того периода.

К сожалению, нынешние крупные музыкальные лэйблы, привыкшие оперировать миллионными тиражами, не проявили должного внимания к этой работе, посчитав переиздание альбома не слишком выгодным делом. И хотя большая часть трэков из "Fight, Fight, Fight" была переиздана на CD в составе различных сборников и в качестве бонус-тэков предыдущих ремастированных альбомов ERUPTION, его полный релиз на CD так и не состоялся. Эту брешь восполнили музыкальные пираты, выпустив на рынок весьма неплохой по качеству бутлег.

Discs 3 and 4 celebrate the rich legacy of 1970’s disco. Massive hits from Earth, Wind & Fire With The Emotions, McFadden & Whitehead and Heatwave feature alongside the extended version of Yvonne Elliman’s ‘Saturday Night Fever’ classic ‘If I Can’t Have You’ – and Odyssey’s sublime ‘Native New Yorker’. Huge club tracks from Dan Hartman and Grace Jones lead into the captivating ‘Like An Eagle’ from Dennis Parker, and Cher literally takes Disc 3 home with her 1979 12” smash.

At over 17 minutes, the 12” version of Donna Summer’s ‘Macarthur Park Suite’ is still stunning and is followed by floor-filling gold from The Trammps with the full version of ‘Disco Inferno’, the sophistication of Chic, Amii Stewart’s ‘Light My Fire / 137 Disco Heaven’, plus Frantique and Vicki Sue Robinson.
