Viewers living outside Germany can watch this film if they have a satellite dish tuned to receive a signal from the Astra 19'2 satellite constellation. It covers almost the entire territory of Europe, including the western part of Russia. The documentary will premiere on 1 July at 20:15 Berlin time on SR. On July 10, replay will take place on SR and SWR TV channels at 11:50 pm.

Roland Helm, the film's author, has known Farian personally for many years. The former SR editor and musician has already written about the producer in his two books "Saar Rock History" and made a film about him for SR TV in 2007. In 2019, Farian unexpectedly invited him to his place in Florida to work together on a project to publish a biographical book and discuss the concept of a new documentary. “I was at his villa for two weeks and did several interviews with him,” says Helm.
Although Farian was born in Kirn (neighboring Rhineland-Palatinate), he lived in Saarland from early childhood, grew up in Saarbrücken-Altenkessel, and then moved to Elversberg. In the early 60s, he abruptly left his job as a chef to form his first band, "Frankie Farian und die Shatten" ("Frankie Farian and the Shadows"). Some of his old colleagues at the time will talk about the producer, along with many others.
In general, one thing is clear for Helm: "It's amazing what outstanding people live in the Saar, right next door to you." For example, Hans-Jörg Mayer. He met Farian at his parents' record store in Elversberg and became an employee of Frank's production company for many years. Although he is a good singer, he does not play musical instruments. Neunkirchen-based restaurateur and artist Gerd Erdmann, whose daughter Fiona Erdmann is a famous model, also talks about his meeting with Farian in this documentary. At that time he took part in one of the song competitions. In addition to fellow musicians from the Saarland region, including professional guitarist and producer Bernd Berwanger, who recorded the intro to the world-famous hit “Where do you go”, Helm also spoke with Milli Segith. According to Helm, after Farian moved his studio from the St. Ingbert Schüren area to the Hessian's Rosbach vor der Höhe to expand the production infrastructure, she was his assistant for many years.
The film also examines the setbacks in Farian's career. Helm, who turned 70 this March, and almost 80-year-old Farian, are united by the fact that they are far from thinking about retirement. Even today, Frank is working on new projects almost every day in his recording studio. He and his 22-year-old daughter Yanina have just released a new version of the classic "Cherish" by Kool and the Gang. In addition, the dance challenge to the old Boney M's hit "Rasputin" has become a big entertainment in social networks.
For Farian, one thing is clear: "Music is a drug, success is a drug." Now he wants to return to his Saar roots and plans to release a new album from his first band, "Die Schatten".

Erfolge und Skandale, Höhepunkte und Rückschläge sowie die bescheidenen Anfänge im Saarland und der weltweite Ruhm: Der Film „Der Daddy Cool aus Elversberg – die Weltkarriere des Frank Farian“ möchte zu dessen 80. Geburtstag am 18. Juli das Lebenswerk des international bekannten Musikproduzenten aufzeigen. Die Erstausstrahlung der 45-minütigen Doku erfolgt am 1. Juli, 20.15 Uhr, im SR-Fernsehen. Am 10. Juli, 23.50 Uhr, ist sie dann im Gesamtprogramm von SR und SWR zu sehen.
Mehr als 900 Millionen Tonträger hat Franz Reuther, wie er mit bürgerlichem Namen heißt, mit seinen Acts wie Boney M., Milli Vanilli, La Bouche und Eruption verkauft und über 850 Gold- und Platinauszeichnungen erhalten. Roland Helm, der Autor des Films, kennt Farian seit vielen Jahren persönlich. Der ehemalige SR-Redakteur und Musiker hat bereits in den beiden Büchern „Saar Rock History“ über den Produzenten geschrieben und schon 2007 einen Film über ihn für den SR gemacht. Obwohl Farian in Kirn im benachbarten Rheinland-Pfalz geboren wurde, lebte er schon seit seiner frühen Kindheit im Saarland, wuchs in Saarbrücken-Altenkessel auf und zog später nach Elversberg. Anfang der 60er Jahre hing er quasi über Nacht seinen Job als Koch an den Nagel, um seine erste Band zu gründen: „Frankie Farian und die Schatten“. Einige seiner alten Weggefährten aus dieser Zeit, kommen – wie viele weitere – im Film zu Wort.
Überhaupt steht für Helm fest: „Es ist erstaunlich, wer hier im Saarland alles um die Ecke wohnt.“ So hat zum Beispiel Hans-Jörg Mayer im Elversberger Plattengeschäft seiner Eltern Farian kennengelernt und wurde zum langjährigen Mitarbeiter des Produzenten. Dieser sei zwar ein guter Sänger, aber spiele selbst kein Instrument. Deshalb habe er einen Song-Scout benötigt. Mit Mayer entstanden Boney-M.-Hits wie „Daddy Cool“, „Rasputin“ und „Rivers of Babylon“. Die Band habe Farian übrigens 1976 in einer St. Ingberter Disco vorgestellt, als er für seinen Schlager-Erfolg „Rocky“ die Goldene Schallplatte erhalten hat.
Auch der Neunkircher Gastronom und Künstler Gerd Erdmann, dessen Tochter Fiona Erdmann ein bekanntes Model ist, erzählt in der Doku von seiner Begegnung mit Farian. Er habe an einem seiner Gesangs-Wettbewerbe teilgenommen. Neben weiteren Musiker-Kollegen aus der Region, darunter den Profi-Gitarrist und Produzent Bernd Berwanger, der das Intro zu dem No-Mercy-Erfolg „Where do you go“ eingespielt hat, spricht Helm auch mit Milli Segith. Nachdem der Produzent sein Studio aus dem Wald des St. Ingberter Stadtteils Schüren der besseren Infrastruktur wegen ins hessische Rosbach vor der Höhe verlegt hat, sei sie jahrelang seine Assistentin gewesen, weiß Helm.
Auch die Rückschläge von Farians Karriere thematisiert der Film. So endete der Welterfolg seines Duos Milli Vanilli 1990 in einem großen Skandal, als bekannt wurde, dass die Frontmänner ihre Lieder nicht selbst eingesungen haben. Allerdings hatte der Wahl-Saarländer ja auch schon Boney M. quasi auf dem Reißbrett entworfen und die männlichen Gesangsparts übernommen. Liz Mitchell, der Leadsängerin des Quartetts, das Farian nach vielen Jahren harter Vorarbeit über Nacht zum Millionär machte, hat Helm ebenfalls interviewt. Die Jamaikanerin tourt bis heute mit den Welterfolgen. Kurz vor dem Ausbruch der Corona-Pandemie trat die Gruppe in Saarland auf – also dort, wo für den „Daddy Cool aus Elversberg“ alles angefangen hat.
Helm, der im März dieses Jahres seinen 70. Geburtstag gefeiert hat, und den fast 80-Jährigen Farian verbindet, dass sie noch lange nicht daran denken, sich zur Ruhe zu setzten. So arbeitet er auch heute noch beinahe täglich in seinem Tonstudio an neuen Produktionen. Gerade hat er mit seiner Tochter, der jungen Künstlerin Yanina, eine neue Version des Klassikers „Cherish“ von Kool and the Gang veröffentlicht. Zudem geht eine Tanz-Challenge zu seinem alten Boney-M.-Hit „Rasputin“ gerade in den sozialen Netzwerken total durch die Decke. Für Farian steht fest: „Musik ist ‘ne Droge, Erfolg ist‘ ne Droge.“ Nun möchte er zu seinen saarländischen Wurzeln zurückkehren und plant neues Album seiner ersten Band, den „Schatten“.
