SCANDAL: Boney M. again found themselves in the clutches of censorship, this time Palestinian

It seems that the songs of Boney M. will always give informational occasions for heated discussion to critics, newspapermen and just music lovers.
The debate around the group's hits, one way or another affecting historical events or the fate of individual characters, began already at the dawn of the popularity of the legendary Caribbean Four, in the distant 1970s. For example, the bestseller "Daddy Cool" was accused by some madmen of promoting pimping, "Rasputin" seemed to be a "politically incorrect" saga about the Russian "holy libertine", "Belfast" - too "conflicting" story about the events in Ulster, "El Lute" - a song, glorifying "anti-state behavior".
As a result, "Belfast" was banned from radio stations in Northern Ireland, "Rasputin" was banned in the USSR, "El Lute" - in several Latin American countries with authoritarian regimes.
And now, after more than 30 years, the turn came to the biggest hit "Rivers of Babylon".
The day before yesterday, some foreign information resources reported that at a concert in Palestine, the musicians were recommended to change the text of the song based on the biblical 137th psalm, which tells about the Babylonian exile of the Jews and their longing for the Promised Land. However, a day later, the authoritative American news agency Associated Press and the British newspaper The Telegraph spread the message that the performance of the song was completely prohibited. The organizers of the festival in Palestine considered "unacceptable" the performance of the song, which contains quotes from the Book of Psalms ("Teilim"), since the Jewish ownership of Israeli lands has always been in question in Arab society.
Original member Maizie Williams, whose band represented Boney M.'s repertoire at the event, said in an interview with reporters that the musicians were disappointed with the decision, which they see as politically motivated.
Recall that last Monday, the Palestinian International Festival began in the West Bank, which will last until Saturday. As part of this event, foreign bands hold concerts in Ramallah, Jenin, Hebron and Beit Lehem.
The song "Rivers of Babylon" (also known as "By the Rivers of Babylon") was first performed in 1970 by the Jamaican reggae group THE MELODIANS. Boney M.'s producer Frank Farian later bought the rights and re-arranged the song, which became a giant international hit. It was released on the super album "Nightflight to Venus" (1978) and also as a standalone single. The song became N1 in the UK for a whole 5 weeks (N2 in sales in the history of the British recording industry), and in West Germany "Rivers of Babylon" set an absolute record: 17(!) weeks N1. Until now, this record has not been surpassed by any performer who has ever appeared on the German charts. The unconditional leadership the single retains in the charts of New Zealand. It was also the highest achievement of Boney M. in the US Billboard HOT100, where the song entered the TOP30. In 1979, when Pope John Paul II made his first trip to Ireland, over a million pilgrims greeted him with Boney M.'s "Rivers of Babylon". It went down in history as one of the most massive performances of a pop hit.

Песня "Rivers of Babylon" (также имеет хождение название "By the Rivers of Babylon" - "На реках Вавилонских") была впервые исполнена в 1970 году ямайской группой THE MELODIANS, работавшей в стиле reggae (рэггей).

THE TELEGRAPH (UK): Boney M. asked not to sing Rivers of Babylon at West Bank concert

The lead singer of the 1970s disco group Boney M. was asked not to sing Rivers of Babylon at the concert in the West Bank because of its reference to Israel.

Maizie Williams said she was asked by the Palestinian organisers not to sing the group's 1978 hit, a song originally written in 1970 by the Jamaican reggae group, The Melodians. The song's chorus quotes from the Book of Psalms and refers to the exiled Jewish people's yearning to return to the land of Israel.
Palestinians often question the Jewish historical connection to the Holy Land.
Miss Williams said she did not know if it was "a political thing or what, but they asked us not to do it and we were a bit disappointed". Organisers said they asked for the song to be skipped, deeming it "inappropriate" for performance at the Palestinian International Festival which has been running this week.
