Fakes "Boney M." continue to tour the world

Despite the fact that due to the imposed sanctions, the number of concerts of pseudo-groups called "Boney M." reached almost zero in Russia, their incomes are unlikely to have fallen noticeably. In the rest of the world there are many countries where they feel at ease.

The problem is that these tribute bands, according to official documents, are simply playing the popular hits of the famous Euro-Caribbean quartet. However, concert organizers tend to keep quiet about the fact that they are only selling audiences a cheap group of musical imitators for a wedding party. The local press, as a rule, does not bother to check the facts and does not mention that you are not coming to a concert of legendary disco stars, but to something completely different.

Over the past year, we again observed an increased activity of such "artists" in the post-Soviet Baltic countries, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, as well as in France, Spain and some other regions of the world. And only in the Spanish press there was a single note that representatives of the original group Boney M. expressed outrage at the tour of another fake.

Once again, we have to remind you that the participants in the most successful project of the German producer Frank Farian were Liz Mitchell, Marcia Barrett, Maizie Williams, Bobby Farrell (died in December 2010) and Reggie Tsiboe. Currently, Liz Mitchell, Marcia Barrett and Maizie Williams continue to tour with their own vocal backing bands. All other persons who pretend (sometimes at the behest of concert organizers and corrupt media) as members of the Boney M. group are ordinary scammers.

Однако организаторы концертов, как правило, умалчивают тот факт, что продают зрителям всего лишь дешёвую группу музыкальных имитаторов для свадебной вечеринки. Местная пресса, как правило, не утруждает себя проверкой фактов и не упоминает о том, что вы приходите не на концерт легендарных диско-звёзд, а на нечто совсем иное.

В течение последнего года мы снова наблюдали повышенную активность таких "артистов" в постсоветских странах Балтии, Казахстане, Узбекистане, а также во Франции, Испании и некоторых других регионах мира. И лишь только в испанской прессе появилась единственная заметка о том, что представители оригинальной группы Boney M. выразили возмущение по поводу гастролей очередного фейка.

Уже в который раз нам приходится напоминать, что участниками самого успешного проекта немецкого продюсера Фрэнка Фариана (Frank Farian) являлись Лиз Митчелл (Liz Mitchell), Марсия Баррэтт (Marcia Barrett), Мэйзи Уильямс (Maizie Williams), Бобби Фаррэлл (Bobby Farrell умер в декабре 2010 года) и Рэджи Цибо (Reggie Tsiboe). В настоящее время Лиз Митчелл, Марсия Баррэтт и Мэйзи Уильямс время от времени продолжают гастролировать со своими собственными группами вокальной поддержки. Without Boney M. and Britney Spears: Sony Music leaves Russia

Sony Music Group has become the first major record company to fully exit Russia, six months after suspending operations in the isolated nation in response to its military invasion of neighboring Ukraine.

In a statement sent to Billboard on Wednesday (Sept. 7), Sony Music Group said it has “made the decision to exit the Russian marketplace completely and transfer the Russian company and its local roster to local management.”

“As the war continues to have a devastating humanitarian impact in Ukraine, and sanctions on Russia continue to increase, we can no longer maintain a presence in Russia, effective immediately,” the statement says.

The local management company that will assume control of Sony’s Russian label interests is being set up and headed by former Sony Music Russia managing director Arina Dmitrieva, sources tell Billboard. The transfer and registration of the new company was posted on the Federal Tax Service of Russia website on Aug. 25.

A source familiar with Sony Music’s decision tells Billboard that the new company is a completely independent and separate entity from Sony Music Group and will only represent locally signed artists.

International acts formerly distributed by Sony Music Russia are not included in the terms of the transfer and Sony Music has made an official request to Russian streaming services for them to take down any Sony Music repertoire still available in the country (new releases have been suspended since March, but albums and songs that were uploaded to local streaming platforms prior to the invasion are still widely accessible).

Sony Music Group’s exit from the country comes almost exactly six months after the company suspended operations in Russia in response to the war with Ukraine. Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group also halted operations in early March, freezing all investments, promotional activities, manufacturing and new releases.

Since then, all three major labels have continued to provide financial support to their Russia-based staff and maintain offices there. Sony Music is the first to fully exit the country, cutting all ties with local employees and domestic artists.

Local industry sources say Sony Music Group had between 40 and 50 staff based in Russia, spread between its record label side and indie distribution arm The Orchard. It is expected that some of those staff will be offered jobs with the newly formed independent label, but exact numbers are not known.

In line with Sony Music’s full exit from Russia, The Orchard will henceforth have no presence in the nation and is understood to have either ended or be in the process of winding down any distribution deals it has with Russian labels.

Prior to the war, Russia’s music industry had grown rapidly to become the world’s 13th-largest music market, according to IFPI’s most recent “Global Music Report,” with recorded music revenues of $328 million in 2021 — a 58% jump over the previous year.

In addition to labels, other major music companies that ceased or altered their operations in Russia following the invasion of Ukraine include Spotify, Amazon, Deezer, TikTok, digital distributor FUGA and Live Nation, leaving the country’s once promising music business in disarray.

Sony and its subsidiaries own the rights to the tracks of many famous artists: Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson, AC/DC, Boney M., ERUPTION, Adriano Celentano, Bob Dylan, Barbra Streisand, Celine Dion, Ozzy Osbourne, Avril Lavigne, Britney Spears, Beyoncé, Alicia Keys, Pink, Shakira, Kasabian and many more. Among the Russian artists are Sergey Lazarev, Denis Matsuev, Diana Arbenina and others.

Медиагигант Sony Music, владеющий правами на распространение многих произведений зарубежных групп и исполнителей, объявил об окончательном уходе из России. Российское подразделение будет работать автономно и сотрудничать лишь с российскими музыкантами, пишет авторитетный американский журнал Billboard. Sony Music отзывает из РФ все права на трэки иностранных артистов. Это означает, что они исчезнут с таких медиаплатформ как VK, «Яндекс.Музыка» и других местных стриминговых сервисов. Новые композиции от Sony Music официально перестали звучать в России с марта.

Sony Music стала первой медиакомпанией, которая полностью прекратила работу в России. Скорее всего за ней последуют и другие. Sony и её дочерние лэйблы владеют правами на трэки множества знаменитых исполнителей: Элвиса Пресли, Майкла Джексона, AC/DC, Boney M., ERUPTION, Адриано Челентано, Боба Дилана, Барбры Стрейзанд, Селин Дион, Оззи Осборна, Аврил Лавин, Бритни Спирс, Бейонсе, Алиши Киз, Пинк, Шакиры, Kasabian и множества других. Среди российских артистов — Сергей Лазарев, Денис Мацуев, Диана Арбенина и прочие.

До печально известных событий в Украине российский рынок подавал большие надежды, демонстрируя неуклонный рост доходов. На момент начала так называемой "специальной военной операции" (24.02.2022) страна занимала 13-е место в мире по объёму генерации доходов от музыкального бизнеса, отмечает Billboard. 

Ранее стало известно, что российские подразделения иностранных музыкальных компаний больше не могут переводить лицензионные платежи в адрес зарубежных правообладателей, хотя некоторые лэйблы всё ещё продолжают продавать принадлежащие им трэки в Россию. Блокировку транзакций банки объясняют президентским указом от 27 мая, по которому лицензионные отчисления в адрес студий из «недружественных» стран нужно переводить в рублях на спецсчёт типа «О». The single "Rasputin" from Majestic & Boney M. was certified platinum in Italy

Boney M. & DJ Majestic's single "Rasputin" has been certified platinum in Italy, according to global music portal EarOne. We previously reported that this popular track has also reached platinum status in Switzerland.

Today, the streaming service EarOne announced the start of rotation on its air of a new remix of the Boney M. track "Ma Baker" (1977). Readers of our blog already know that the work on the modern adaptation of this cult hit of the disco era was carried out by the famous DJ and mix master Gerry Read. We hope that this single, which is promoted by the media giant Sony Music, will also be an international success.

European major LEONINE Studios reveals first look on its international biopic GIRL YOU KNOW IT’S TRUE, produced by Wiedemann & Berg Film.

After a year of intense casting in five countries, newcomers Tijan Njie from Germany and Elan Ben Ali from France are set to portray the lead roles of the Milli Vanilli frontmen Robert Pilatus and Fabrice Morvan, the top-charting pop and R&B duo. Matthias Schweighöfer (Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer”, “Heart of Stone”, “Army of the Dead”) is starring as German music producer Frank Farian. The cast also includes Graham Rogers (“Ray Donovan”, “The Kominsky Method”, “Atypical”) as Milli Vanilli’s US assistant Todd and Bella Dayne (“Humans”, “Troy – Fall of a City”) as Milli, Farian’s right-hand.

The film is centered around the true story of the notorious scandal involving dancers Robert Pilatus’ and Fabrice Morvan’s rise to fame in the late 1980s as pop sensation Milli Vanilli. Orchestrated by music producer Frank Farian, they became global stars with three No. 1 hits in the US. But only a small circle of insiders know that the duo is not singing but lip syncing to the voices of two other artists. At the height of their fame, Milli Vanilli win the Grammy Award but the situation behind the scenes escalates and the pressure on Rob and Fab grows. When the truth is revealed, they stare into the abyss while the world witnesses one of the biggest scandals in music history.

Multi award-winning filmmaker Simon Verhoeven is directing, based on his original screenplay GIRL YOU KNOW IT’S TRUE. Quirin Berg and Max Wiedemann, producers of the Academy Award® winning film THE LIVES OF OTHERS, the two-time Academy Award® nominated film NEVER LOOK AWAY and the groundbreaking Netflix Original Series DARK are producing. Producer Kirstin Winkler (“2012”, “10,000 BC”, “Anonymous”) is overseeing production.

Principal photography takes place in Munich and Berlin (Germany), Capetown (South Africa) and Los Angeles (USA). Filming will wrap in December 2022. The film follows a true language approach and is shot almost entirely in English. The title echoes Milli Vanilli’s 1988 break-out hit GIRL YOU KNOW IT’S TRUE, originally written by the US Hip-Hop group Numarx and later covered by successful music producer Frank Farian.

Kevin Liles, member of Numarx, legendary co-founder and CEO of music company 300 Entertainment is executive producing alongside co-producers Simon Verhoeven, Frank Farian and Stefan Gärtner. Associate producers are Jasmin Davis, daughter of the late John Davis, and Brad Howell, who were the true voices of Milli Vanilli and invaluable consultants in the development phase. Carmen Pilatus, sister of the late Rob Pilatus, Milli Vanilli’s former assistant Todd Headlee, and Ingrid Segieth aka Milli, Frank Farian’s right-hand, are also attached as associate producers.

Writer and director Simon Verhoeven says: “GIRL YOU KNOW IT’S TRUE is captivating on so many levels. It not only tells the spectacular rise of two underdogs making it to the zenith of showbiz within one summer, it also gives a fascinating glimpse behind the scenes of that illusory world of fame and its sometimes tragic and unscrupulous machinations. Personally, I think Rob and Fab did not deserve to become the sole scapegoats of this scandal.”

The film is produced by LEONINE Studios and Wiedemann & Berg Film, in co-production with Sentana Film, SevenPictures and Mediawan. Independently from LEONINE Studios’ feature film, US entertainment company MRC is producing a documentary on Milli Vanilli, directed by Luke Korem. Korem also serves as a producer via his Keep on Running Pictures. Bradley Jackson and Fulwell 73 also produce. Hanif Abdurraqib will executive produce. Quirin Berg, Max Wiedemann, Simon Verhoeven and Kirstin Winkler are serving as associate producers on this documentary project as well.

Recall that the United States is also preparing its own adaptation of this sensational story. Renowned Hollywood director Brett Ratner has been planning to shoot his own biopic about Milli Vanilli for a long time, but these plans were postponed indefinitely due to the scandal, inflated by the #metoo feminist movement, which accused Ratner of sexually harassing several actresses. In the spring of this year, the director categorically denied the accusations and said that he did not refuse to work on a film about Milli Vanilli, despite the break in relations with a partner film distribution company. The media reported that Ratner allegedly found independent sources of funding for the implementation of his project.
