Daniel Lopes: from D.J. to DSDS Sex Symbol. The "latin prince's" controversial career.

Daniel Lopes was born on November 12, 1976 in the Brazilian city Recife, which is located on the east coast of the country. He began to study music as a child and by the age of 13 he was good at playing the guitar and piano. The first public appearance was when young Daniel played in his school band "Domino".

Daniel had two big hobbies - music and football. However, a back injury did not allow him to make a serious bet on a sports career, so the young man decided to devote his future life to music. The next few years, the young singer and musician spent in various groups.

Daniel's fate was not easy. At the age of 5, he lost his father, and a few years later his 13-year-old sister Dalvanisia died in a car accident. When Daniel was 15, his mother Darva decided to move to Germany in search of a better life. Together with Daniel, she took with her and his older brother Gumersindo. The family settled in the city of Schloss Holte (North Rhine-Westphalia), with a population of 26,000. There Daniel studied at a technical school, after which he studied as a trade insurance agent. In his free time, the guy performed in the youthful musical group Crazy Boys. It seemed that the young Brazilian was destined to become a middle-class clerk, quite satisfied that he had managed to find a place under the Sun in prosperous Germany. However, a lucky break drastically changes his life.

Once Daniel, who has a bright appearance, took part in the youth competition "Face 97", which was held by one of the modeling agencies. Among other things, the contestants had to demonstrate their vocal abilities. Thanks to his talents, Daniel received an author's contract as a prize. From that moment on, music again returns him to the alluring world of show business, where childhood dreams come true.

In early 2000, Daniel Lopes went to the Spanish island of Mallorca, located in the Mediterranean Sea. There he performs in nightclubs and discos. The singer has won the sympathy of the public, who visit this famous international resort in large numbers. During one of the concerts he is noticed by the Cologne producer Sven Kirchner and offers to start a joint project in Germany. Returning to his second homeland, Daniel begins to work hard, resulting in the emergence of a number of potential hits. Kirchner shows the recorded demo material to the famous Frank Farian, who decides to take Daniel under his wing.

Farian includes Daniel in his new project called D.J. According to the producer's idea, it should be a duet of two young sexy Latinos. Together with Daniel, Julien Rego, a native of Venezuela, was involved in the D.J. project. The name of the duo was formed from the initial letters of the names of the soloists.  The material for the debut single and upcoming album was recorded at Farian's studios in Rosbach (Germany) and Miami (USA).

Frank Farian's company FMP planned to start the project in the USA. The debut was being prepared for the fall of 2001. However, the tragic events of September 11, which shocked the whole world, thwarted the DJ's promotion plans. The American public was in a deep depression, so dance projects faded into the background. Pop music sales were then at the lowest point in US history.

Farian tries to save the new duo by releasing D.J.'s debut single "Kiss On My List" in Germany. However, the project, initially targeting an American audience, is failing in Europe. The promotion of the single went sluggishly (just at that time the conflict between Farian and his publisher BMG reached its climax and the promoters of the media giant practically sabotaged his advertising campaign). Farian temporarily freezes the work with the D.J. project. Venezuelan Julian, not believing in the future of the duo, leaves the group, and without much success is trying to find an application for himself in American show business. Daniel, taking advantage of a break in work, flies from Miami to Germany. Without informing Farian about his plans, he takes part in the competition "Germany is looking for a superstar" (DSDS - the German analogue of the TV show Anerican Idol), which was curated by local showman Dieter Bohlen. Daniel effortlessly gets into the first season of this RTL TVs project. Thanks to his participation in DSDS, Daniel is gaining popularity, but does not reach the final due to the revealed fact of his work as a professional singer, as well as due to the erupted sex scandal. Nevertheless, in a short time, "Latin prince" Daniel Lopes has become a real pop idol for the large youth audience of DSDS. This was an unexpected surprise for Farian, who learned about the secret hobbies of his ward after the fact. The producer did not start a showdown with his protégé and strongly recommended that the ambitious guy return to Miami to finish work on the album (already as a solo project of Daniel Lopes). As a result, the first debut single "Shine On" reached №14 and stayed on the German charts for 9 weeks. This was followed by two more singles, including the ballad "In The Night (I Miss You)", which Daniel dedicated to his untimely deceased sister.

Realizing that the events were going well, Frank Farian forced the release of Daniel's debut album "For You" (without the help of the former BMG distributor), which eventually reached gold status. This was followed by a DVD-version  titled "Daniel Lopes On Paradise Island". Filming of this special video took place in the Bahamas, the beautiful views of which were an excellent decoration. For the production of video clips, Farian hired his long-term partners - Camelot Films.

Together with Daniel, other Farian's artists took part in the recordings of the album "For You" - the trio NO MERCY (together with Lopes they sang the opening track "Summer Angel"), the young singer Norissa (in a duet with Daniel she sang the lyric song "By Heart") and girl group THE GIFT (a new version of MILLI VANILLI's smash hit "I'm Gonna Miss You").

After the end of his contract with Farian and FAR Music, Daniel continued his career by releasing several new singles and an album. Then the singer became interested in club music and he could often be seen not only on stage, but also at the DJ console. In addition, he participated in a number of popular reality shows on various German TV channels (Supertalent 2011, DSCHUNGELCAMP 2012, etc.). However, throughout his career in Europe, the press constantly flashed messages about his love affairs, huge debts and even a forced connection with the mafia, which we have already talked about in our blog.

Currently, Daniel Lopez resides alternately in Brazil and Germany, where he continues his career full of surprises in the entertainment business.

Семья поселилась в Schloss Holte (земля Северный Рейн-Вестфалия), насчитывающем 26.000 жителей. Там Даниэль учился в техникуме, после окончания которого обучался на агента по торговому страхованию. Певец завоевал симпатии публики, которая в больших количествах посещает этот известный международный курорт. Во время одного из концертов его замечает кёльнский продюсер Свэн Кирхнер (Sven Kirchner) и предлагает начать совместный проект в Германии. Не поставив в известность Фариана о своих планах, он принимает участие в конкурсе "Германия ищет суперзвезду" (DSDS - немецкий аналог телешоу Anerican Idol), который курировал местный шоумен Дитер Болен (Dieter Bohlen). Даниэль без особых усилий попадает в первый сезон этого проекта телекомпании RTL. Благодаря участию в DSDS, Даниэль набирает популярность, однако не доходит до финала из-за вскрывшегося факта его работы в качестве профессионального певца, а также из-за разразившегося сексуального скандала. Тем не менее, за короткое время "латинский принц" Даниэль Лопес становится настоящим поп-идолом для многочисленной молодёжной аудитории DSDS. Это явилось неожиданным сюрпризом для Фариана, который узнал о тайных увлечениях своего подопечного постфактум. Продюсер не стал устраивать разборки со своим протеже и настоятельно порекомендовал амбициозному парню вернуться в Майами, чтобы закончить работу над альбомом (уже как сольный проект Даниэля Лопеса). В результате первый дебютный сингл "Shine On" достиг 14-го места и продержался в чарте Германии 9 недель. Вслед за этим в продажу поступила видеоверсия на DVD под названием "Daniel Lopes On Paradise Island". Several artists from Frank Farian's crew will perform in Romania on September 18th

Today, legendary performers from such famous Frank Farian's projects as Boney M., ERUPTION and NO MERCY will appear on two concert stages in Bucharest and Cluj.

Boney M. feat. Liz Mitchell and Eruption feat. Precious Wilson will perform in Cluj at the BT Arena Polyvalent concert hall. Also announced the participation of such famous European stars of the 80s as Gazebo, JOY, F.R. David and tribute bands ABBA.

NO MERCY feat. Marty Cintron will take to the stage at the National Arena in Bucharest, where the FOREVER HIT festival is taking place on a grand scale. The organizers expect this event to be included in the World Records Book, as, among others, the concert program will include 80-year-old Jimmy Helms (Londonbeat), who on his anniversary will perform as "the oldest active male pop group singer". Representatives of the Guinness Book of Records have already arrived in the Romanian capital to record this event. Also, viewers will meet with such artists as Haddaway, Sandra, Dr. Alban, Thomas Anders (ex-Modern Talking), Alphaville, Snap !, Nana, Technotronic, Las Ketchup, Ice MC, Mr. President and C-Block.

Two weeks earlier Marty Cintron performed with great success in Dubai, where he told local journalists about the upcoming series of 6 documentaries about his producer Frank Farian. 

Speaking to "The National" newspaper before a Dubai Opera concert, Marty Cintron, lead singer and sole member of former Europop trio NO MERCY, says he will appear in the series that examines Farian’s Midas touch over his four-decade career.

"Not many people today really know who Frank is and what he achieved in the industry. It's pretty crazy how much he did," says Cintron.

"It's made by a production company based in Germany and it will be a six-part series which will really go into his work. I will probably be on it because Frank wants me to and a few other acts he worked with."

Farian, 80, will have a lot of options to draw from.

After failing to make his mark as a solo act in the 1960s, he did the next best thing and recorded hits and promoted them by hiring musicians for public performances.

This was how Boney M. and Milli Vanilli were formed and ruled the charts through the 1970s and 1980s.

Farian wrote, produced and sung a many of the tracks while the hired help did the song and dance routine on stage.

While such a move proved relatively successful for the performing artists, it wasn't so for Milli Vanilli.

Cintron’s contributions to the series will focus on the next phase of Farian’s career, when he helped lead the 1990s Europop scene by creating and producing hit groups such as La Bouche, Le Click, Eruption and No Mercy.

Where La Bouche and Le Click anthems Sweet Dreams and Call Me subscribed to Farian’s vision of layering soulful vocals over tightly coiled dance beats and surging synths, No Mercy was where the maestro recorded his most organic sounds.

This was thanks to Cintron, whose parents migrated to the US from Cuba, being an accomplished flamenco guitar player.

“I first met Frank in Miami in 1992 before the band started and back then I was a big fan of the Spanish guitar,” Cintron recalls.

“At the time, I was hanging out with the Gipsy Kings before they really exploded on the scene and they showed me all these guitar techniques. I went on to infuse that into the No Mercy sound.”

While Cintron was a key player in the recording sessions, Farian was in charge of proceedings.

"The thing with Frank is that he was formerly a cook before he started singing and that's how he approaches the studio in that he has his hand in everything," Cintron explains.

"He is hands-on in the console, he does the songwriting, the lead and background vocals and the mixing.

“But at the same time, he also leaves us in the studio to kind of finish the song or for us to come up with something new which he would then go on to rearrange."

That approach is responsible for Cintron putting his mark on No Mercy’s biggest hits Where Do You Go and Kiss You All Over, which features his sensual guitar flutter over the euphoric dance production.

“It is a formula that went on to work,” he says.

“It also, I feel, helped bring a bit of the Latin sound to a new audience and I feel we played our part in that before Ricky Martin, Jennifer Lopez and now Maluma took it into a cool new direction."

While Cintron may have not achieved the relative commercial heights of those names, he is content with his enduring career.

“It’s not that there is a revival of '90s pop music, it has always been there,” he says.

“Before Covid, I have been touring non-stop and I recently played a show in Budapest, Hungary. And in all these shows I just see people smiling and really enjoying the happiness the music from that era really embodied.

“I look forward to sharing those happy moments now with all of you in Dubai.”

Majestic & Boney M. "Rasputin" entered the UK Top 40 Summer Hits and achieved gold status in several European countries

With the end of the summer season 2021, Boney M.'s hit "Rasputin" left the British TOP100 Singles, receiving several prize trophies at once. For the past 8 months, this song has been at the top of the UK Official Trending Chart, peaking at №11 on the nation UK chart, and has also entered the TOP40 of the UK's Summer Greatest Hits 2021. In addition, Boney M. was shortlisted for the Best Comeback nomination at the MTV VMAs, and was included in the TOP5 of the most demanded tracks of the past thanks to the same "Rasputin".

Recall that the next ascent of the 43-year-old song in the world digital download charts began last fall, when the youth social network TikTok literally exploded from the number of videos made for this track, as well as from the number of their views. At the same time, the second wave of popularity of "Rasputin" arrived in the Just Dance challenge, which was no less successful than 10 years ago. The success of the immortal hit was soon reinforced by a new remix from British DJ Majestic, which returned the song to the charts in many countries around the world.

Currently "Rasputin" continues to be in the top lists, having received gold status in several countries. In addition, DJ Majestic's remix is still on the TOP100 Singles charts in a number of European countries, as well as digital download charts on other continents including North America and Australia*.
