Frank Farian & OMEGA

One of the oldest and most famous European rock groups - the Hungarian OMEGA, released its first album in 1968. In the same year, in fact, the group was finally formed by school friends Kobor, Benke and Joseph Lauks. But it all started much earlier, in 1962. The guys could not agree on who and what musical instrument would play, so they invited a couple more comrades to properly organize the instrumental accompaniment.

At first, the musicians performed cover versions of famous Western bands. In 1966, the first single was released with their own interpretation of the song "Paint it black" by the Rolling Stones. On side B, the Hungarians published a composition of their own composition. Later, OMEGA released a whole series of new singles, after which they were invited to open the concerts of The Spencer Davis group, touring in Hungary. The British touring manager was so enamored with the young musicians' playing that he arranged for OMEGA to visit the United Kingdom, where the guys played a series of concerts, and then were invited to Decca records, where they recorded their first English-language album "Red Star".   

During the second British tour, the musicians were recalled to their homeland in connection with the events in Czechoslovakia and the aggravated confrontation between East and West. Therefore, OMEGA recorded their second album in Hungary, and it was distributed only in the countries of the Eastern bloc. The LP featured the song "Gyongyhaju Lany", which the Scorpions will cover in the future under the title "White Dove". The Hungarian band could no longer get into England, but somehow they were allowed to go on tour to Japan, where OMEGA took part in the "Yamaha Music Festival" (1970) held in Tokyo. There, OMEGA performed their own English version of the song "Gyongyhaju Lany" under the title "Pearls In Her Hair". The Japanese liked the song very much and JVC (Japan Victor Company) released it as a single. The members of OMEGA got to know the taste of success and with the appearance of a rival team "Locomotive GT" in their native Hungary, they decided to change their sound to a heavier one. At the same time, some musicians were replaced in the group.

By 1973, OMEGA had the status of a very popular live band. The group gave concerts in the USSR, Spain, Sweden and Turkey. Moreover, OMEGA participated in a joint tour with the super popular Scorpions. However, communist politicians could not calm down, and after the concerts in East Berlin, they said that OMEGA was playing the "wrong" music. The band members were urged to "think seriously about your future". Due to such ideological pressure, by the end of the 70s, OMEGA only managed to release a couple of English-language albums.

However, over time, censorship weakened and after the release of the "local" Hungarian album, the group went to Germany, where they recorded a "western" version at the Bellaphon studio. In the early 80s, OMEGA, with the help of highly influential producer Frank Farian, moved to the major label WEA (the West German arm of WARNER Music). The recording of new material was carried out with the direct participation of the legendary producer. The 1981 album "Working", released on WEA, was a selection of English-language versions of the band's well-known compositions, reworked. The last track from this LP inspired a much stronger version of this song performed by Boney M. Farian and his studio team perfectly arranged the "unkempt" composition of the Hungarians, calling it "Future World". The song was featured on the 1984 concept album "10,000 Lightyears". Another composition taken for Boney M. from OMEGA's repertoire was "Wild Planet", which is very similar to "Ajánlott útvonal". However, the Hungarian musicians were not mentioned in the credits of this composition. Instead, the authors of the arrangements from the FAR Music studio team were indicated. Probably, Farian simply bought the rights to this melody during the period of active cooperation between OMEGA and his production company.

After the 20th anniversary show in Budapest, the band only released a couple of LPs between 1982 and 1987. It was announced that "Babylon" would be their last release. However, after 6 years the musicians decided to revive the good name of OMEGA and recorded the concept album "Trans And Dance".  In their native Hungary, the group immediately achieved superstar status. OMEGA also played concerts in front of an audience of 80,000 people. These shows featured Klaus Meine (Scorpions) and Rudolf Schenker as invited guests.

В том же году, собственно, группа и была окончательно сформирована школьными друзьями Кобором, Бенке и Джозефом Лауксом. Но всё началось гораздо раньше, в 1962-м. Парни никак не могли договориться, кто на чём будет играть, поэтому пригласили ещё пару товарищей, чтобы правильно распределить инструменты. Поначалу музыканты исполняли каверы западных коллективов. В 1966 году вышел первый сингл с кавер-версией "роллинговской" "Paint it black". На стороне B присутствовала композиция собственного производства "Омеги". Далее последовала вереница синглов, после чего группа была приглашена открывать концерты "Spenser Davis group", гастролировавшей в Венгрии. Менеджер последних был так очарован игрой молодых музыкантов, что организовал "Омеге" визит в Британию, где парни отыграли серию концертов, а затем были приглашены в студию "Decca records", где записали свой первый англоязычный альбом "Red star". Во время второго британского тура музыканты были отозваны домой в связи с событиями в Чехословакии и обострившимся противостоянием Востока и Запада. Так что свой второй альбом "Omega" записывали у себя в Венгрии и распространялся он только в странах восточного блока. На пластинке присутствовала композиция "Gyongyhaju Lany", на которую "Scorpions" в будущем сделают кавер, правда с другим названием, "White Dove". В Англию группа уже не могла попасть, но каким-то образом её отпустили в Японию, где она приняла участие на "Yamaha Music Festival", проходившем в Токио в 1970 году. Там "Omega" исполнили англоязычный вариант "Gyongyhaju Lany" – "Pearls In Her Hair". Японцам песня очень понравилась и "JVC" выпустила её как сингл. К 1973 году "Omega" имела статус очень популярного концертного коллектива. Группа выступала с концертами в СССР, Испании, Швеции и Турции. Немцам команда тоже нравилась и альбом 1977 года "Time Robber" получил в Германии "золото", а сама "Омега" участвовала в совместном туре со "Scorpions". Однако политики никак не могли успокоиться, и после концертов в Восточном Берлине музыкантам было объявлено, что они играют "неправильную" музыку. Им было предложено подумать о своём будущем. Из-за такого прессинга, к концу 70-х годов "Omega" удалось выпустить лишь пару англоязычных альбомов. Однако со временем дело наладилось и после выхода "местного" венгерского альбома группа поехала в Германию, где на студии "Bellaphon" записывался "западный" вариант. В начале 80-х, команда, с помощью Фрэнка Фариана, перебралась на крупный лэйбл WEA (германское подразделение WARNER Music). Запись новой работы осуществлялась при непосредственном участии легендарного продюсера. Альбом 1981 года "Working", вышедший на WEA, представлял из себя подборку англоязычных версий известных композиций группы, переработанных заново. Последний трэк диска стал прообразом гораздо более сильной версии этой песни в исполнении Boney M. (Фариан и его студийная команда великолепно аранжировали "непричёсанную" композицию венгров, назвав её "Future World". Она была помещена в концептуальный альбом 1984 года "10 000 Lightyears"). Ещё одной композицией, взятой для Boney M. из репертуара "Омеги", стала "Wild Planet", которая очень похожа на "Ajánlott útvonal". Однако в кредитах этой композиции венгерские музыканты не упоминались. Вместо них были указаны авторы аранжировок из студийной команды FAR Music. Вероятно Фариан просто выкупил права на эту мелодию в период активного сотрудничества "OMEGA" с его компанией.

После шоу в Будапеште, посвященного двадцатилетию коллектива, группа выпустила всего пару дисков за период 1982 - 1987. Было объявлено, что "Babylon" станет их последним релизом. Однако спустя шесть лет музыканты решили возродить доброе имя "Омеги" и записали концептуальный альбом "Trans And Dance". В родной Венгрии группа тут же достигла статуса суперзвёзд. "Omega" также дала концерты перед аудиторией в 80 000 человек. На этих шоу в качестве приглашённых гостей были Клаус Майне ("Scorpions") и Рудольф Шенкер.
