In August 1979, Boney M. performed as guests of honor at the international pop song festival in the famous Polish resort town of Sopot.The concert was broadcast on Intervision channels (Association of TV and Radio Companies of the Socialist Camp) in many European countries. However, the USSR, which got involved in an Afghan military adventure that year, imposed censorship to limit the "harmful ideological influence of the West." The final concert of the Sopot festival was shown by the USSR Central Television only in recording, a few days later. In previous years, Soviet TV viewers watched this festival live. Boney M.'s 55-minute performance was cut to two numbers ("Rivers of Babylon" and "El Lute").
In those days, the usually quiet resort of Sopot looked like a besieged fortress. The news of the arrival of Boney M. attracted a huge number of people to the city from all over Poland and even from neighboring countries.  At the same time, a delegation of Soviet journalists invited to an international symposium of TV and radio broadcasters was in this popular place, located on the Baltic coast. Many years later, one of them told the FFFclub news blog the details of that memorable day (unfortunately, he refused to record this interview on video camera):

"Sience morning, the streets of Sopot were patrolled by mounted police, all approaches to the famous Forest Opera, where the concert was to take place, were blocked by several cordons of law enforcement officers. It was impossible to enter this territory without presenting a ticket or invitation. By the way, the Soviet delegation had such invitations. However, at the last moment, the leaders of the delegation decided to refuse to go to the show, as they feared the unpredictable behavior of the crowd of thousands who were besieging the territory adjacent to the venue of the festival. Thus, the Soviet delegation of journalists was forced to watch a concert on TV at the home of one of their Polish colleagues.
Concert organizers were forced to take the Boney M's members to the Forest Opera by helicopter, as the superstars' car ride through the crowd of fans seemed unsafe. Most people did not have any opportunity to get to the concert, so they cherished the hope of seeing their idols at least through the glass of the limousine.
Following the example of the "senior comrades" from Moscow, the Polish party functionaries "did not recommend" the group to perform the composition "Rasputin". However, the pressure of the audience, demanding the performance of their favorite hit, was so high that artists decided to show this number in the final of the concert. According to some reports, there was a struggle behind the scenes. A plainclothes officer was trying to prevent the song from playing.This is indirectly confirmed by the content of the video clip with a fragment of the concert, which is now available to youtube users.
By prior arrangement with the organizers, Boney M. was to perform "Gotta Go Home" as an encore. But at the last moment the song "Rasputin" was turned on "out of plan". Viewers who watched this performance on local TV witnessed censorship on the air. After the first chords of the longed-for hit sounded, the broadcast was interrupted. A set of static slides appeared on TVs, shamefully overlapping the "seditious" song.Polish television ideologues feared anger the high communist leaders in Moscow... But 4.5 thousand lucky people who are in the Forest Opera rejoiced. What they begged for so long during the whole concert has come true! And only many years later the video of the "forbidden ending" was made public...".

In 2009, the legendary Forest Opera in Sopot celebrated its 100th anniversary. On this occasion, the popular Polish magazine Dziennik published an article entitled "Wagner, Goebbels and Boney M. were in Sopot." True, the authors of the article omitted the details of that concert, mentioning only one scandalous legend. Allegedly, Boney M. demanded a white helicopter for a spectacular landing near the stage. There was no such "luxury" in socialist Poland, so the artists had to be content with a Soviet-made military helicopter.
Over the several decades of the history of the Sopot festival, many world stars have performed on the stage of the Forest Opera. However, according to the Polish press, Boney M.'s performance was the most exciting, sensational and emotional. This is unlikely to happen again with any other superstar.

Концерт транслировался по каналам Интервидения (ассоциация телерадиокомпаний соцлагеря) на многие страны Европы. Однако в СССР, который в тот год влез в афганскую военную авантюру, стали "завинчивать гайки", ограничивая всяческое "вредоносное идеологическое влияние". Лишь спустя несколько дней сопотский финальный концерт был показан по ЦТ СССР. 55-минутное выступление Boney M. было "урезано" до двух номеров ("Rivers of Babylon" и "El Lute").
В те дни обычно тихий курортный Сопот был похож на осаждённую крепость. Весть о приезде Boney M. привлекла в город огромное количество людей изо всех уголков Польши и даже из соседних стран. Тогда же в этом популярном местечке, расположенном на берегу Балтики, находилась делегация советских журналистов, приглашённых на международный симпозиум телерадиовещателей. Один из них и поведал FFFclub подробности того памятного дня (к сожалению телеинтервью он дать отказался):
С утра улицы Сопота патрулировала конная милиция, все подходы к знаменитой Лесной Опере, где должен состояться концерт, были перекрыты несколькими кордонами стражей правопорядка. Попасть на эту территорию без предъявления билета или приглашения было просто невозможно. Кстати, у советской делегации такие приглашения были. Однако в последний момент руководители группы приняли решение отказаться от похода на шоу, поскольку опасались непредсказуемого поведения многотысячной толпы, осаждавшей территорию, прилегающую к месту проведения фестиваля.
Самих же участников Boney M. организаторы вынуждены были доставлять туда на вертолёте, так как поездка суперзвёзд на автомобилях сквозь толпу фанов казалась небезопасной. Большинство людей не имело никакой возможности попасть на концерт, поэтому они лелеяли надежду увидеть кумиров хотя бы через стекло лимузина.
Следуя примеру "старших товарищей" из Москвы, польские партфункционеры "не рекомендовали" группе исполнять композицию "Rasputin". Однако напор публики, требовавшей исполнения любимого хита, был настолько высок, что артисты приняли решение показать этот номер в финале. По некоторым сведениям, за кулисами буквально развернулась борьба. Некий сотрудник в штатском пытался предотвратить запуск фонограммы песни. Это косвенно подтверждает и содержание видеролика с фрагментом концерта, доступном теперь пользователям youtube. По предварительной договорённости с устроителями, "на бис" Boney M. должны были исполнять "Gotta Go Home". А вот "Rasputin", в последний момент, пошёл "вне плана". Телезрители (в том числе и советская делегация журналистов), наблюдавшие это выступление по местному ТВ, стали свидетелями цензуры в прямом эфире. После того, как зазвучали первые аккорды вожделенного хита, трансляция прервалась. В кадре появился набор статичных слайдов, стыдливо перекрывших "крамольную" песню. Польские телевизионные идеологи опасались разгневать высоких коммунистических начальников в Москве... Зато 4,5 тысячи счастливцев, находящихся в Лесной Опере, ликовали. То, чего они так долго вымаливали на протяжение всего концерта, свершилось! И только годы спустя видеозапись "запретного финала" была обнародована...
В 2009-м году легендарная Лесная Опера в Сопоте отметила 100-летний юбилей. По этому случаю популярный польский журнал Dziennik опубликовал статью под названием "В Сопоте были Вагнер, Геббельс и Boney M.". Правда авторы статьи опустили подробности того концерта, упомянув лишь об одной скандальной байке. Якобы Boney M. потребовали для себя вертолёт белого цвета ради эффектного появления недалеко от эстрадной площадки. Такой "роскоши" в социалистической Польше не оказалось и артистам пришлось довольствоваться военным вертолётом советского производства.
За несколько десятилетий истории сопотского фестиваля на сцене Лесной Оперы выступило немало звёзд мировой величины. Однако, как сообщает польская пресса, выступление Boney M. стало самым захватывающим, сенсационным и эмоциональным. Такое уже вряд ли повторится с кем-нибудь ещё...

How Boney M. committed “sabotage” at the international pop song festival Sopot '79 in communist Poland

In August 1979, Boney M. acted as honored guests at the international festival of pop songs in the Polish city of Sopot. The concert was broadcast under the auspices of the Intervision organization for many European countries. The Intervision Song Contest (ISC) is a television show conducted by the countries of the so-called "Soviet bloc" as alternative to the Western European Eurovision Song Contest. However, in the USSR, which that year made a military invasion of Afghanistan, the authorities began to "screw nuts", limiting any "harmful ideological influence". Only a few days later, the edited video of the final concert of the Sopot '79 festival was shown on the central television of the USSR. The 55-minute Boney M. performance was cut to two numbers ("Rivers of Babylon" and "El Lute").

In those days, usually a quiet resort town of Sopot was like a besieged fortress. The news of the arrival of Boney M. attracted a huge number of people from all corners of Poland and even from neighboring countries. At the same time, a delegation of Soviet journalists invited to the international symposium of television and radio broadcasters was located in this popular place located on the Baltic. One of them, after many years, told in an exclusive interview for FFFclub the details of that memorable day:

"Throughout the day, the horse police patrolled the streets of the city. All approaches to the famous Forest Opera (Opera Lesna), where the concert should take place, were blocked by law enforcement officers and secret services. It was impossible to get to this territory without presenting a ticket or a special invitation. By the way, our delegation had such invitations. However, at the last moment, the leaders of the Soviet journalistic group decided to refuse to visit the concert, as they feared the unpredictable behavior of a huge crowd, which stormed the territory where the festival was held.

The organizers were forced to deliver the Boney M.'s participants by helicopter, since the trip of superstars on cars through the crowd of fans seemed unsafe. Most people had no opportunity to get to the concert, so they was cherished the hope of seeing their idols at least through a limousine glass."

Following the example of "senior comrades" from Moscow, Polish party functionaries strongly did not recommend to the group to perform the song "Rasputin", which was insanely popular. However, the pressure of the public, demanding the performance of his beloved superhit, was so high that the artists decided to show this number in the final. According to some reports, the struggle literally unfolded behind the scenes. Some security officer tried to prevent the launch of the phonogram of the song. This indirectly confirms the non-edited video of the concert, which became available some time ago to fans of the Caribbean Quartet.* According to preliminary agreement with the concert organizers, Boney M. were supposed to perform the song "Gotta Go Home" in the final. However, at the last moment, the long-awaited hit "Rasputin" suddenly sounded. Spectators (including the Soviet delegation of journalists), who watched this performance on a local television channel, became witnesses to censorship on the air. After the first chords of the coveted track sounded, the broadcast was interrupted. A set of static slides appeared on the television screens overlapping the forbidden song. Thus, the Polish authorities prevented the appearance on the air of an “ideologically wrong song” so as not to angry their Moscow bosses... But 4.5 thousand lucky people who were in the Forest Opera Theater were rejoiced. What they begged for so long throughout the concert has happened! And only many years later, the video recording of the "forbidden final" was published...

In 2009, the legendary Sopot's "Forest Opera"  celebrated its 100th anniversary. On this occasion, the popular Polish magazine Dziennik published an article entitled "Wagner, Goebbels and Boney M. was in Sopot". True, the authors of the article lowered the details of that concert, mentioning only one scandalous fable. Allegedly, Boney M. demanded for themselves a white helicopter for the sake of a spectacular landing near the stage. There was no such luxury in communist Poland and the artists had to be content with Soviet-made military helicopter.

For several decades of the stories of the Sopot festival, a lot of global stars have performed on the stage of the Forest Opera. However, as the Polish press reports today, "Boney M.'s performance has become the most exciting, sensational and emotional. This is already unlikely to happen again with someone else."
