The premiere of the documentary "Boney M. from Lämmerspiel" took place at the 5th LICHTER FILMFEST in Frankfurt am Main on March 28, 2012, and the TV premiere on HR (part of Germany's largest media network ARD) is dated 8th April 2013. In the spring of 2015, the film was released on DVD as part of the "Boney M. DIAMONDS FanBox" special anniversary edition.

Dreams, successes and disappointments have accompanied Boney M., Europe's most successful pop group in the 70s, since its founding in 1975. There are currently 3 Boney M. bands that are touring around the world. About 200 million albums and singles sold, hundreds of gold, platinum and even diamond awards for record achievements in the recording industry are tangible evidence of the fame of this project. In 1978, Boney M. became the first Western pop group, which was warmly received even in the citadel of the then communist empire of the USSR. In the same year, Queen Elizabeth II of Britain welcomed the Boney M. participants to the UK's most prestigious gala show.

In the UK, Boney M. has 3 of their singles in the top ten bestsellers of the 20th century. The group conquered Europe, Africa, the Far East and Canada with their music. Even in Jamaica, they successfully performed famous Caribbean tunes in Western European arrangements. They shared the stage with Rita Marley (the widow of the king of reggae music Bob Marley), jointly performing the timeless hit "No woman no cry".

But who of today's young people knows the real story of Boney M.? Does anyone remember the names of the stars of Boney M. these days? If you pick up old Boney M. records or cassettes with hits like Rivers of Babylon, Sunny, Rasputin, or their 1976 bestseller Daddy Cool, you're unlikely to get all the information. The names of the studio technicians and musicians are listed in credits, as well as the pseudonym of their producer Frank Farian (real name Franz Reuther). But the names of the soloists are not mentioned there. Therefore, it is not surprising that rumors circulated around Boney M. from the very beginning that it was supposedly a fake group that performed exclusively under someone else's phonogram.

Directors Eddie Jacobs and Christian Lang tried to unravel this tangle of mysteries and tell the true story of the Boney M. project. The starting point for the search was a legend that has been told from generation to generation in the Hessian town of Lämmerspiel (translated from German as "Playing Lambs"), the homeland of Jacobs and Lang. What do famous Caribbean hits have to do with a small town in a German province?

Filming began back in 2004. Thanks to financial support from the Hessian Film Fund, Jacobs and Lang met with all four members of the "classic" Boney M. line-up, as well as musicians, technicians and eyewitnesses to those events. This allowed the authors to form their own view of the history of the first casting group in Germany to achieve worldwide fame. The filmmakers witnessed how Boney M. and their creators dispose of their musical heritage. Liz Mitchell, Marcia Barrett and Maizie Williams continue to tour the world, each with their own backing band. With Bobby Farrell, who passed away in December 2010, the creators also managed to communicate during a very emotional interview.

The film crew accompanies the stars of Boney M. on tour, travels with Maizie Williams to her old home in Lämmerspiel and shows Frank Farian, who is planning to fulfill his life's dream - a musical with world-famous hits of its artists - from Boney M. and Milli Vanilli to La Bouche and No Mercy. The musical premiered in London's West End, and then toured Europe, starting in Berlin, where a unique mobile theater was built...

Boney M. from Lämmerspiel is a film about dreams, success and fond childhood memories that we all need to keep alive.

Der Dokumentarfilm "Boney M. aus Lämmerspiel" wurde am 28. März 2012 beim 5. LICHTER FILMFEST in Frankfurt am Main uraufgeführt, die TV-Premiere im Kanal HR ist vom 8. April 2013. Im Frühjahr 2015 erschien der Film im Rahmen der Jubiläums-Sonderedition „Boney M. DIAMONDS FanBox“ auf DVD.

Träume, Erfolge und Enttäuschungen begleiten Boney M., Europas erfolgreichste Popband der siebziger Jahre, seit ihrer Gründung 1975. Derzeit gibt es drei Formationen, die unter dem Namen "Boney M." auftreten. Mit Boney M. wurden Millionen umgesetzt, Hunderte Goldener Schallplatten bezeugen den Ruhm vergangener Tage. Boney M. war die erste westliche Popband, die 1978 in der damaligen UdSSR auftreten durfte. Im selben Jahr wurden die drei weiblichen Mitglieder und der Mann, der bei den Shows auf der Bühne zu sehen war, von Queen Elisabeth II. empfangen.

In England hat Boney M. bis heute drei Titel in der Top-Ten-Liste der meistverkauften Titel. Die Band eroberte Europa, den fernen Osten und Kanada; selbst auf Jamaica spielte sie ihre westlichen Interpretationen oftmals karibisch verwurzelter Musik. Gemeinsam mit Rita Marley trat sie dort auf und sang "No woman no cry". Doch wer kennt Boney M. heute noch? Kennt überhaupt jemand noch die Namen der Stars von Boney M.? Wer Boney M.s alte Platten mit Titeln wie "Rivers of Babylon", "Sunny", "Rasputin" oder ihren ersten Hit von 1976, "Daddy Cool", zur Hand nimmt, wird auch nicht viel schlauer. Techniker und die Namen der Musiker sind bei den Credits aufgeführt. Auch der Name von Produzent Frank Farian ist auf den Plattenhüllen zu lesen. Doch die Namen der Sängerinnen und der männlichen Stimme werden nicht erwähnt. Kein Wunder, dass sich von Anfang an Gerüchte um Boney M. rankten, dies sei eine Playbackband, alle vier bewegten bei Auftritten nur die Lippen.

Die Filmemacher Eddy Jacobs und Christian Lang spürten der Geschichte der Band nach. Aufhänger für die filmische Spurensuche ist eine Geschichte, die im Heimatort von Jacobs und Lang, dem kleinen hessischen Nest Lämmerspiel, seit Generationen schon erzählt wird: "Boney M. kommen aus Lämmerspiel". Welche Verbindungen bestehen also zwischen karibisch anmutenden Hits und der deutschen Provinz? Die Dreharbeiten begannen 2004. Von der Hessischen Filmförderung finanziell unterstützt, drehten Jacobs und Lang mit allen vier Boney M.s, Musikern, Technikern und Augenzeugen und lassen sie ihre Sicht auf die Geschichte von der ersten Castingband Deutschlands erzählen. Dabei wurden die Filmemacher Zeuge, wie Boney M. und ihre Macher mit dem musikalischen Erbe umgehen. Denn Liz Mitchell, Marcia Barrett, Maizie Williams touren jeweils mit ihrer eigenen Boney M.-Truppe durch die Welt. Auch Bobby Farrell, der 2010 verstarb, drehten die Filmemacher und führten ein emotionales Interview.

Der Film begleitet die Stars von Boney M., reist mit Maizie Williams zurück an ihren alten Wohnort in Lämmerspiel und zeigt Frank Farian, der seinen Lebenstraum verwirklichen will: ein Musical mit all den Hits seiner Karriere, von Boney M. über Milli Vanilli bis zu La Bouche und No Mercy soll im Londoner Westend entstehen und in einem riesigen Zelttheater um die Welt ziehen. "Boney M. aus Lämmerspiel" ist ein Film über Träume, Heimat und Erfolge und die Notwendigkeit, Erinnerungen am Leben zu erhalten.

Даже на Ямайке они с успехом исполнили знаменитые карибские мелодии в западноевропейских аранжировках. Они выступали на одной сценой с Ритой Марли (вдовой короля музыки рэгги Боба Марли), совместно исполнив неувядающий хит «No woman no cry».

Но кто из сегодняшних молодых людей знает настоящую историю Boney M.? Помнит ли кто-нибудь в наши дни имена звёзд группы Boney M.? Если вы возьмете старые пластинки или аудиокассеты Boney M. с такими хитами как «Rivers of Babylon», «Sunny», «Rasputin», или их первый хит 1976 года «Daddy Cool», вы вряд ли получите исчерпывающую информацию. Имена студийных техников и музыкантов указаны в кредитах, равно как и псевдоним их продюсера Фрэнка Фариана (настоящее имя Franz Reuther). Но имена солистов там не упоминаются. Съёмки фильма начались ещё в 2004-м году. Благодаря финансовой поддержке кинофонда федеральной земли Гессен (Hessian Film Fund), Якобс и Ланг встречались со всеми четырьмя участниками "классического" состава Boney M., а также музыкантами, техниками и очевидцами тех событий. Это позволило авторам сформировать свой собственный взгляд на историю первой в Германии кастинг-группы, добившейся всемирной известности. Создатели фильма стали свидетелями того, как Boney M. и их создатели распоряжаются своим музыкальным наследием. Лиз Митчелл, Марсия Барретт и Мэйзи Уильямс продолжают гастролировать по миру, каждая со своей группой музыкального сопровождения. С Бобби Фаррэллом, скончавшимся в декабре 2010 года, создатели также успели пообщаться в ходе весьма эмоционального интервью.

40th anniversary of Boney M.'s cult album "Boonoonoonoos" / 40-летний юбилей культового альбома Boney M. "Boonoonoonoos"

In the fall of 1981, the most expensive and ambitious album in the history of the recording industry in West Germany was released. The Boney M. group, which achieved the status of an international pop phenomenon, was preparing to meet the new decade with a radically updated image and move away from the stereotype of a purely entertainment project. Producer Frank Farian made great efforts to bring the new work to a qualitatively different level. In order to achieve these goals, huge funds were invested in the refurbishment of the complex "FAR Studios" owned by Frank Farian, as well as in the lease of a number of high-class recording studios around the world (including London's Abbey Road).

Conceptually, the super-album "Boonoonoonoos" in some places was somewhat reminiscent of the pretentious works of Pink Floyd with their historical and political subtext. However, Boney M. nevertheless remained, first of all, a commercial pop project, so the management of the record label HANSA did not dare to completely break away from the realities of the mass market. The long search for a new style slowed down the band's active touring activities for almost a year and a half. All this time, Farian has been conjuring in the studio with a group of high-class musicians and sound engineers on an advanced sound, which, however, they quite succeeded. As a result of endless experiments, more than a dozen versions of the album were released in various editions and mixes (connoisseurs of Boney M.'s art claim that there were at least 14 of them!).

However, the fans of Boney M. were not unanimous in their assessment of this work. Those who were able to grasp Farian's pioneering ideas welcomed LP "Boonoonoonoos" well. Others, on the contrary, were disappointed with the loss of the "magic of the 70s". One way or another, the disco era was coming to an end, so it is unlikely that the preservation of the old style would allow making profits in the same volume. Today it is quite obvious that by changing the style of Boney M. Farian did the right thing, thereby ensuring more or less stable functioning of the project for the next 5 years. But many other disco stars of that time, lagging behind fashion or simply unable to offer something qualitatively new, had already ceased to exist by the beginning of the 80s.

Presented here is a new video version of the track "Don't Kill The World" from the album "Boonoonoonoos", which was also released as a standalone single, and reached N1 in Spain and South Africa. In Germany the song reached N12 and in the UK at N39.

Even exactly 40 years later, this "ecological anthem", recorded long before Michael Jackson's similar work "Earth Song", remains very relevant.

Осенью 1981 года вышел самый дорогой и амбициозный альбом в истории звукозаписывающей индустрии Западной Германии. Группа Boney M., добившаяся статуса международного поп-феномена, готовилась встретить новое десятилетие радикально обновлённым имиджем и отойти от стереотипа чисто развлекательного проекта. Продюсер Фрэнк Фариан (Frank Farian) предпринял большие усилия, чтобы новая работа получилась на качественно ином уровне. Ради достижения поставленных целей были вложены огромные средства в переоборудование принадлежащего Фрэнку Фариану комплекса "FAR Studios", а также в аренду лучших звукозаписывающих студий мира (включая лондонскую Abbey Road).

Концептуально суперальбом "Boonoonoonoos" местами чем-то напоминал претенциозные работы Pink Floyd с их историко-политическим подтекстом. Однако Boney M. всё-таки оставался, прежде всего, коммерческим поп-проектом, поэтому совсем отрываться от реалий массового рынка руководство рекорд-лэйбла HANSA не рискнуло. Долгий поиск нового стиля притормозил активную гастрольную деятельность коллектива почти на полтора года. Всё это время Фариан колдовал в студии вместе с группой высококлассных музыкантов и звукоинженеров над передовым саундом, что, впрочем, им вполне удалось. В результате бесконечных экспериментов было выпущено более десятка вариантов альбома в различных редакциях и микшировках (знатоки творчества Boney M. утверждают что их было не менее 14-ти!).

Однако фаны Boney M. оценили эту работу неоднозначно. Те, кто был в состоянии понять новаторские задумки Фариана, хорошо приняли "Boonoonoonoos". Другие, наоборот, были разочарованы утратой "магии 70-х". Так или иначе эпоха disco подходила к концу, поэтому вряд ли сохранение прежнего стиля позволило бы получать прибыли в прежнем объёме. Сегодня совершенно очевидно, что сменив стиль Boney M., Фариан поступил правильно, обеспечив тем самым более-менее стабильное функционирование проекта в последующие 5 лет. Но многие другие тогдашние диско-звёзды, отставшие от моды или просто неспособные предложить что-то качественно новое, к началу 80-х уже прекратили своё существование.

Представленная здесь новая видеоверсия трека "Don't Kill The World" с альбома "Boonoonoonoos", которая также была опубликована как отдельный сингл, достигла N1 в Испании и ЮАР. В Германии песня достигла N12, а в Великобритании N39.

Даже ровно 40 лет спустя этот "экологический гимн", записанный задолго до аналогичной работы Майкла Джексона "Earth Song", остаётся весьма актуальным.
